I have a 3 button key for a MKV Golf.
The remote function has stopped working.
I went to my local VW garage (Trafford Manchester) and they said that the keys sometimes "loose" the code.
It would be £48 to recode and this might not work, a new key £160.
1) Is there anyway of doing this cheaper?
2) When I bought the car I was given a 2nd key, but this is not for mine, how can I code this and get a new blade cut for cheaper than £160?
Cheers
(p.s. I did search on here, but could find any answers)

I think the dealer is the only option for both.
This was asked many times by TT owners who had lost keys and wanted to buy a cheap one off ebay.

Duno if this may help, I saved it from a thread..........
recently bought a brand new key fob on ebay for about 40 quid!...got these with it and thought it might help anyone else who needs to programme a new fob!
How to synchronise a new remote keyfobs
You'll need two keys to do this
1. Place your first key into the ignition and turn to the second notch (do not start the car)
2. Now close the door and place your second key into the handle lock
3. Turn the key to the lock position and let it spring back to the central position.
4. Hold down the Lock button on your new remote, you may hear a bleep from the car
5. Now unlock the car using the key in the barrel and remove, then take your first key out of the ignition
6. Close the door
7. Your remote should now be coded

Can anyone confirm if that works?

That's a std procedure for VAG cars - confirmed to work on older cars, but I personally have tried it on my Mk5. I don't think you can do any harm by trying it. Have you replaced the batteries??
It's possible to buy a fob off ebay (make sure you get the right one) and do it on the cheap. I bought one off fleabay for a fiver, then got VW to supply the cut key and re-code it - all in was about £60.

Apart from the buy the key off Ebay part (I didn't do that bit) Yes I can confirm that it works. I did it about 6 months ago when the battery packed up on my key, I replaced the battery and then followed those exact instructions and it worked a treat. :smug:

How do you change the battery in the remote please ?.

Any locksmith will cut the key for you - if you have an existing key as a 'pattern', they will work from that. If they are 'consientious', then they may need some kind of ID - photocard driving licence and V5.
Any good?

Thanks TT, I got an answer elsewhere. I realise it's easy to get one cut. It's the coding bit, or does the mk4 1.6 match not have an illmobilser?

I'm not sure on that - but I would have honestly expected ALL Mk4s to have an immobiliser. It is usually the alarm system which is not standard fitment on lower spec models.
When you separate the key into two halves, can you see an immobiliser 'chip' in the 'key section'?
Anyway, prolly best asking the Mk4 chaps/chapesses for the correct info.
