Title: Whats the number called I need to ask my dealer for?
Post by: p3asa on 13 August 2009, 12:29
I've read somewhere VW issue the pre production cars with a number and this number has a name attached to it but I can't remember it or find it via the search.

I want to phone my dealer to ask for this number so I can contact VW direct with a query.

Anyone know what number I'm asking for and the best number to phone VW on?

I'm sure there was a thread running on here but can't find it now!!

It's the vehicle commission number. This number is for VW UK Customer Care 0800 0833 914.

Car has a build date of week 36, dealer says I can't alter spec. I want to enquire at VW if I can or by how much it will put the build date back by. No harm in asking.

Well I phoned VW. I always reckon its best of 3 with call centres

The first guy I called said as soon as the car had a production week it was then frozen in the system and nothing could be altered. That was due to the car having the extras all lined up for that particular production line.
I asked, was there no way for the car to be even unfrozen, the extras added to the order and the car put back in to the system and maybe slipping back build weeks, a week or two. To which he said no, it would have to be cancelled and completely reordered.

He wasn't for budging at all, even when I said I may as well just cancel then

I left it an hour or so and phoned back and the next guy asked me for my consignment number to have a look. I never had it but explained the circumstances to him. He more or less said the same as the first guy although was slightly more sympathetic. I explained I only ordered the car 3 weeks ago but was told by the dealer I would have a few weeks to finally decide on any extras and never really got that chance. I told him it would be a shame to cancel the order and start again when all I was wanting to do was give VW more cash   At this point he said if my dealer phoned VW sales in Germany direct, they could sometimes alter the order. So I phoned the dealer, explained the circumstances and he told me to leave it with him. So far no word but I'm ever hopeful

I don't want to cancel the order as my dealer gave me a good price for my trade in even although my trade in would be worth a lot less by the time the golf arrived.

sadly that sounds consistent with what i've been told too. i.e that i couldnt make changes more than 2 weeks after ordering.

Sadly that is the case. Once a car has frozen for production, it cannot be changed. The only way would be to cancel it completely and start again.

This could delay it by quite some time as dealers have very little GTI/GTD allocation slots left. For example, I've used my August and September allocation already. If a customer ordered one today, I would need to use one of my October allocation, giving the car a delivery of December (if very very lucky) but mroe likely january meaning you will have to pay VAT at the new higher rate.

Out of interest, what changes did you want to make to your order?

Dealer phoned Germany and sent a fax or at least he told me that.
He was told as soon as it has been issued with a build week it is basically allocated to the factory along with the spec it is to be built to and is literally frozen in the system.
With a couple of thousand cars a week going through their system / factory they are unable to change any orders without unfreezing them first which means the car comes out the slot it has been allocated to and you then have to start again with a new order.

The only way to jump the queue is if the dealer already has a car waiting to be allocated without a buyer then you can be allocated that one as long as its not got a build date.  Unlucky for us the golf is proving to be popular so every car already has a buyer!!

My extras were an after thought.
Storage I can probably do without as it just encourages me to collect more junk. Heated seats I've never had so can't miss. Well that's my reckoning anyway
