hello all new to the site and got a couple of questions.
I owned a golf vr6 highline for a number of years and to be honest i never had a problem with it and was a very good all round car, i then sold it and bought dare i say it a subaru sti type R which i love but its not an every day car...
Anyway I am in the process of buying a mk 3 golf gti 16 v.. which i plan to turbo... t3 low comp pistons and remap/change ecu...
I have a mate that can engineer flanges to fit a turbo to so thats sorted.. I`m just wondering if i am going to have to drill into the block/sump for the oil return or has someone got a different way of doing this? and what engine management everyone that has done this has used? will the standard ecu be ok chipped?
i`m sure someone on here has done this before and i`d like to know any problems you have run into?
I`m going for a reliable golf with around 250 bhp ish... adjustable boost... 7-15 psi

i heard someone did this with megasquirt, have seen a map on one of the sites, should be able to get custom chip too, good luck with it and keep us posted

best off trying edition38 forum for this sort of thing, lots more of it on there.
management - emerald or if you want to do it on the cheap then megasquirt.
is not easy to turbo a N/A engine, so good luck!

Yeh, get yourself on Edition38 for advice.
This mk3 forum is more dreamers, and non mk3 gti owners, than people who actually do it mate.
But i think there is one or 2 abf turbos on there, and also people who know the knowledge.

An ABF turbo is supposed to be a proper nutter, but they're the rich man's 20VT motor.
By that I mean that it's quite a project to put one together - the motor you're building was never available stock.
User Steph on CGTI is building one at the moment. DannyP on here is threatening to build one at some point.
You should be able to drop the oil return down to the sump. You could either keep the alloy ABF sump or just fit a TDI sump - already has the return in it.
The standard management won't really do - it's not easy to remap and you can be a lot more flexible with Emerald, Megasquirt or another aftermarket management system.
You may find with a thick head gasket you can get a sufficient drop in compression ratio to run a turbo on an ABF with stock pistons. Definitely worth looking into.
Good luck with it, should be an interesting motor. Don't be put off by people doing this forum down. There's an increasing number of people on here with good skills and knowledge..... just maybe post in the Garage section for this query.
