Hi, i have browsed this site a few times in the past but only joined today after buying a Mk2 Golf GTI 16v on e-bay for the sum of £352 ! Its got 10 months MOT but i have no idea of the condition, picking it up sometime this week. It is going to be a dedicated track car but need to be able to drive to & from track. Brands Hatch & Lydden are my local ones. I'm hoping once i've stripped it out it might go a bit better with less weight. I want to do this track car on a small budget & not really go mad so i'm looking at a cheap set of coilovers & G60 brakes,ARB's,strut braces & bucket seat for now. Maybe a 2.0 bottom end next year depending on how much use i get out of the car.
I have done quite a few trackdays over the last 6 or 7 years but trying to comprimise with a car that is for the road aswell & this doesn't really work. Had a 3dr Sierra Cosworth with big brakes,coilovers,350bhp,R888's etc etc & that was fun for 4 yrs. Changed to a M3 Evo & modded brakes , suspension + track wheels with R888's, only did 2 trackdays in this & 4 laps of the Ring. I found that with these cars it got expensive modifying them for track & was always worried about crashing them.
I have a Volvo V70 R manual awd (the later 2003 model with 300bhp) which i have had for 3yrs & is the family transport, i also have a facelift 2000 BMW M5 E39 as a bit of a toy & hope to go back out to the Ring in this, its a beast of a car !
So any tips for improving the handling/performance of the Golf on a small budget would be good, i'm hoping that with it being quite light once i've stripped it it should be good fun on trackdays & it won't matter too much if it gets a few dings or even a big ding !

check the golf doesn't have holes in it before you spend any money on it.
if it does - take some decent photos and stick it back on ebay.

Yes will deffo check it over for holes 1st etc , i don't expect it to be in that good condition for £352 ! It will be a start if it makes the 120 mile journey back ! I'll post some pic's up when i get it.

Welcome aboard matey

Welcome fellow new boy!
Check out Nige's car on either Northloop or BigPower.
His Mk 2 virtually lives at the 'Ring and he's transformed it. (Top bloke too from our brief meet at the 'Ring last year) If you struggle finding his build thread just ask.

Off to pick up the car today, the 1st hurdle is if it makes it home with no drama's ! I suppose thats the problem when you buy a car blind off of e-bay ! Once its home then i can get underneath & check for corrosion to see if its goer for my track project
Cheers Simon.

I know this is an old thread but thought i better report that the shed did make the 120 mile journey home & it wasn't until i was 5 miles from home i could find 5th gear !! Revved its nuts off all the way home in 4th as i couldn't get 5th ! Then it dumped a load of coolant in the garage when i got home, i also had to rip the horn wires off as the horn kept going off when steering wheel turned.
The car has not really moved since August 09,had some welding done & does have a cage in it now , stripped out, got lots of other bits for it but not yet fitted.
I'll start a thread up about it in the correct section.
Cheers Simon.
