Title: Changing wishbones on mk3
Post by: mk3valver on 09 August 2009, 19:25
Hi peeps,

MOT time has come and I need to replace both of my wishbone bushes. I've been told it's easier to do the full wishbones? I have (I think) all the tool's to do the job but I'm not sure I could pull it off?! If anyone has done this themselves and has any tip's they'd be much appriciated (pics would'nt go a miss either!)

And also, I've not purchased any yet so if anyone has the 2 for sale or can recomend some (not performance as they'd be too expensive) that would be a big help aswell!

Thank's in advance, Matt

if u have a press then just buy the bushes but its dam easier to buy complete wishbones, ebay is good for that thing

Soak everything in plus gas for at least a day first and pray the bolts come undone. Me and 2 mates did mine on the Rado yesterday and had to admit defeat on the passenger side one, just could not get the end bolt out despite over 3 hours and many different methods of loosening.

Could you not loosen it or was just spinning over?

Couldn't get it undone. Seemed to rusted into the bush sleeve and thread. Ended up with it rounded off, re cut the face with a grinder but couldn't get anywhere with it so left the wishbone on. I would have considered cutting it all off if I the car didn't have the MOT tomorrow and I had somehwere to leave it in bits.

What tools are you using?
I take it you can't get to the end one with an impact gun?
You need a mega big breaker bar

Yeah no space for the impact gun and a long breaker just rounded it off, even tried hammering a smaller socket on it and not joy. It killed at least one socket and loosened a breaker bar!

It's now gone in for it's MOT so we'll see what happens. If it fails I'll get em to try and do it (left the wishbone in the boot) if it passes I'll get it back in in a few weeks and get them to try and slacken the bolt off so I can get it home and swap it.

Can you not drop the subframe so you can get an impact gun on it?

Another suggestion Nick, i've got a meter long breaker bar if you want to borrow it
