running temp is about 102 at the moment, but i havent given it a real long drive yet that was 20 minutes running but was doing alot of work cause the clutch is fried so lots of slipping and high rev's. just have to keep an eye on it for now.

sounds ok to me rain, i wouldnt worry. wait till youve got the clutch done and see what it runs at under 'normal' driving conditions, but i dont think youve got owt to worry about mate.

thanks knite/blue im just trying to get an idea its got loads of small problems from years of neglect like filters not replaced and breather filters replaced with what looks like sellotape and teabags :-\
when i got it from the scrappy it had receitpts for new exhaust and full service either there fake not sure why my mate would fake when its sold as scrap or some real bodger has been repairing it.

Mines a 16V but I get around 98 - 108 when fully warmed!
Hope that helps :)

i do a round trip of 70 miles each day in my H reg 8v. i have had the temp upto 114, and it regularly sees 108. depends if im running quick and if the weathers hot. if im just cruising 98 to 102 is about the usual.

Just to add my two penneth, 102 is well in its capabilities, it's when they start pushing 120+ that you need to hold back a bit. :) My camper runs at 110 - 115 on motorway runs without any probs (touch wood) and that's 31 years old :) By the way rain, don't start caining it until the oil temp gets to at least 70.

According to the Matey Matey website, in normal operation the oil temp of the 8v should not exceed 100 degrees, and the valver should not exceed 110 degrees. In reality my 16v runs between about 95 and 105 degrees.
Gibby - I was wondering what sort of temp I should be waiting for before thrapping it - I usually wait until about 90; it would be interesting to see what the oil companies recommend..
-
no worries gibbs by the time i get anywhere i can thrash it near me it be nice and warm :D, got so my speed humps no point thrashing it just to go 20 yards :P
-
i get about 90 normally most i ever had it is 96 tho in my 8v
-
My mk1 cab runs at about 96 - 100 most of the time depending on whether I'm giving it some, this question has been asked loads before but in the VW owners manual it says something like 80 - 120 is quite normal. :)

Again, my manual says something like don't over accelerate until the oil temp is displayed, which is at 50, so if you wait until 70 it should be plenty warm enough to kick some a s s. :)
