Title: Non power steering to power steering
Post by: Adam_C on 09 August 2009, 11:27
Hi,

im doing an engine swap at the moment. i have a 1.8 8v gti with power steering and im changing the lump to a 1.9 8v gti so exactly the same just had some work done.

only issue i have is that the old engine has power steering and i was wondering how hard is it to swap over and if i wanted could i just leave it off and run it without powersteering or is the rack different?

cheers in advance chaps.

Can you not just swap the pulley/pump, etc. over from the old engine to new? I did that but the other way around on my conversion.

The rack is very different,

A gear ratio steering:
   - Free-assisted steering
       20.8
   - With assisted steering
       17.5
The number of turns the steering wheel from lock to lock:
   - Free-assisted steering
       3.83
   - With assisted steering
       3.17

Even with a drained PAS rack - it would still be pretty darn heavy, much heavier than non-pas. Just throw the PAS bits onto the new engine - its well easy, takes about 10 minutes max!
