Title: on idle
Post by: match on 07 August 2009, 18:47
Hello when my mk3 is on idle it sits at 1000 rpm and drops to 800rpm then 1400-1500rpm then 800rpm and it does this all the time non stop any ideas?

Has the 1.4 not got a carb?  If so there will be an idle jet that will probably be blocked.

Is that single point injection as opposed to multi on a gti, how does that work then?

yes..

well its like a carb, but it has one injector that feeds all 4 cylinders unlike gti's that have one injector per cylinder.

it is single point i ran an injector cleaner through it (redex)

Correct.
However everything is controlled by an ecu, that's where it differs from a carb.

A couple of suggestions.
Check for any vacuum leaks around the injector unit.
Also there is a throttle potentiometer with a built in idle switch on the injector unit.

thanks will have a look for splits and whats this switch?

Next to the where the throttle cable mounts is a 4 pin connector.
Disconnect it, put a multimeter set to resistance on the bottom 2 pins.
With the throttle slightly open it measure not more than 200 ohms.
With the throttle shut it should measure infinity.

I dont suppose you have a diagram?

A feeler gauge is used to test the switch in this diagram.

if it has an isv, i would try cleaning it out and seeing if that makes a difference

I don't think the ABD engine has an ISV, at least i can find one listed....

Post by: match on 07 August 2009, 20:55
what will this show me if it doesnt read infinity?
Title: Re: on idle
Post by: AudiA8Quattro on 07 August 2009, 21:12
It will show that the idle switch is not working properly, so the ecu will not know when the car should be in idle mode..
Title: Re: on idle
Post by: match on 07 August 2009, 21:19
so just a simple switch switch then?
Title: Re: on idle
Post by: AudiA8Quattro on 07 August 2009, 22:06
Yes, pretty much. I think it also has the throttle position built in.
It may not be your fault at all, but its worth a look.

Title: Re: on idle
Post by: match on 08 August 2009, 16:31
from induction to carb
really small could just hear the hiss
Title: Re: on idle
Post by: AudiA8Quattro on 08 August 2009, 16:32
Like i thought then. Most of these problems are usually down to vacuum leaks.
Title: Re: on idle
Post by: match on 08 August 2009, 16:35
The hose didnt look up to much so i got a new one just had to trim it up.
Just a quick one can i put an induction kit on my golf or is it not worth the hassle?

I probably wouldn't bother on a 1.4.
If you set it up right, as in the cone filter at the front of the car, you will get slightly improved throttle response, but thats all.
