i have a 1.4 mk3 as im sure you have all guessed... it has done 84000 miles. was a good runner!
i put a new cam belt on in feb ish costing £280 and it flew through its mot in june only needing a tyre.
thing is, since the mot everything has gone! the clutch is slipping abit, not badly yet but needs doing. all the bushes need doing, the altenator belt needs changing, the arches are all rusty, not massively but its only down hill from here and the exhaust is nackred.
the question is.. do i fix it up?? i have jsut got a job which requires me traveling quite some miles everyday (stockport-ish to deeside) or do i look for a mk4 tdi..? the 1.4 is good as i am 19 and the insurance is 'cheap'..
just after a few opinions please!
cheers

Only 30mpg? Fcuk that!
My old Mk3 Golf 1.4 could get between 40 and 45mpg!!
To be honest I'd just fix the 1.4! And if you call those arches rusty, you wanna see mine!
-
GTI would be crazzzy on insurance.. is it even worth much in its state!?
hahaa i have given them a lil bit of attention ( an extremely bad attempt at sorting them, 2 coats of paint dosent do much..)
-
I would go for a mk4 TDI
-
I would go for a mk4 TDI
+1 ideal for wat you need and all variations are quality cars!
-
If i was you, get rid!...sell it if you can....
Then get yourself MK3 or Mk4 GTI when i was 19 i had my GTI insured for £550 fully comp  I'm sure others on here have got even cheaper!!
-
If your doing a lot of miles, I would stick with the TDI option.
-
depends how much you wana pay. that 1.4 should be good for a few years yet. fixing it up wont be too bad. getting a mk4 is obviously more cost, not convinced you will save much on petrol however, the 1.4 is pretty good for miles. and then you got the extra insurance too...
and after all...its better the devil you know...
-
go for a mk3 8valve i get 38mpg at 70mph on the motor way
-
where are you going for this insurance!?? for me on my own on that 1.4 im getting quotes of £4500!!! im with my dad at the mo paying £1200.
the exhaust has been patched now for a tenner, it was doing my head in... also i would keep the mk 4 for a good while too, spend money on good wheels and stuff.. i wanted to with this, but dont think its worth it..??
-
probably not with a 1.4, depends on your preference, engine mods are a no go for the 1.4.
i have just turned 20 and i have just got a mk3 gti for 700 quid a year on insurance, believe it or not i was paying 700 for my 1.4! so it pays to shop around and changing some of the variables!
-
hmmm iv messed about loads on 'gocompare' and all that, never got anything that low! only engine mod on it is an induction kit..
-
Try www.bell.co.uk i got my old pulsar for less than a grand everyone else was quoting me nearly 2 grand
-
i loved them pulsars..... proper nice cars, just there nissan. and i hate nissan lol.
proper nice car tho.
-
Look up the insurance on a Mk4 TDI First. Just becuase it uses satans fuel, dont mean it will be cheap to insure. And there are different engined mk4 tdis, some are not that slow.

Holy fck! At 17 I was paying 664 quid on a Mk3 1.4 Ryder (Insurance group 7), Then I turned 18 and bought a 1.4 SE (Insurance group 8 ) and paid 700 quid!
I've just turned 19, and I'm paying 535 quid on a Mk3 1.6 CL, but I'm currently saving up so I can insure my 2.8 VR6 Highline for 1200!

Somebody is blatantly ripping the piss out of you fella, those quotes are simply ludicrous.
-
i think you might be right fella.
just checked on this bell one.. and for my 1.4 its £3600 and for the mk4 its £4200 whats goin on!!??
-
lmao
I can insure a Mk4 2.0 GTI for 700 quid fully comp
-
Thats some crazy figures!! At 18 i was paying £550 Fully comp on my 2.0 8v Gti (I'm 20 now) gone down to £450 :) Got quoted an extra £60 or so for a 16 valver and i reckon i could get insured on a VR6 for well under 1k
-
iv not been driving a year yet.. passed in october.. maybe itl drop alot then?? loads wont even quote!
anyone kno if vw do deals on brand new ones.. with this pay monthly crap with insurance too? could be an option..
just out of intrest, how much do you tell them mod. wise?
-
I tell them EVERY mod I have. I don't fancy them not paying out.
-
did that push it up much??
-
Yea it pushes it up quite abit. When I put my exhaust system on the bumped it up 200 then Hellas and HIDs went up another 50. Little things like black badges, leathers and even red calipers need to be told, they didn't put the price up for them.
-
stick with yours dude throw some money at it and tidy it up get it running rite. some times it's better the devil you know  pluss theres a golf same colour as yours by my in laws house slamed on bbs wheels colour coded with clear/crystal rears and looks the dog's danglies
-
hmm iv not said any of the ones on mine.. when i got the car it haught it just had wheels, but looks like its been lowerd too. not sure if they are coilovers or not ho.. haha blistlen VNE-4114 or something..??
you recon? am i trying to polish a turd?? haha or is it worth throwing money at a 1.4..
i think i might make it last til xmas.. than go for the mk4.. save abit of money up.
-
If you crash and your insurance company want to be asses about things and dont want to pay out you will have your insurance void and suffer points and a huge fine.
-
hmmm maybe i shoudl tel them then.. haha im not arsed about the parts.. like if someone robbed my wheels..
wel, that seems to have answred that problem! with alloy wheels and lowred suspension and an airfilter its 8 grand.. cheapest.
