Title: Hardcore wheel wobble
Post by: Benrevs on 06 August 2009, 20:24
Im running out of ideas here.  At 60mph I cant see my hands for movement.  I had the wheels re-balanced, tracking done, checked the cv joints, engine mounts, subframe mounts, crossmember mounts.. pretty much everything.  Im starting to think that I may have a bent shaft(oo err) as it came on over a day or so. Anyone got any ideas on how to check em? I havnt hit anything or anyone recently so im baffled! Ben

You could try jacking it up at the front, put it on stands put it in first or second and have a look at the shafts spinning. Should be noticable if one is bent.

Does it shake the whole car or just the wheel? i had an issue like this a while ago and not to alarm you but it turned out that the diff in the gearbox was partially seazing as it was spinning resulting in a mega wobble through the whole car that was really bad at 60mph might be worth getting checked out,i ended up buying a new gearbox!

I had a similar problem on my ibiza once.It turned out to be the rubber doughnut in the middle of the driveshaft(drivers side) Once fixed it was perfect.Well as perfect as an ibiza could be lol

erm back to basics

1, have you checked the tyres ?

2, have you swapped wheels / tyres front to back ?

i had the same, the wheels were balanced but one of them was buckled. really badly. took it to a tyre fitter and he showed me it on the spinny balancy thingy, not a pretty sight

Solved! Turn out the tyre was dodgy.. although brand new, it had a high spot in it which didnt show on the balancing machine thingy.  Have been sorted with a replacement. Cheers for the ideas guys.

Good to hear it was a simple fix, hope they replaced the tyre FOC.
