basically my cars been in the garage all week as the mechanic couldnt figure out what the problem was as the car just would not start. got it started once but it wouldnt rev and then cut out in the end. was put through a diagnostic check today and he said that the maf sensor and the ecu are both playing up and not working as they should and may need to be replaced. is there anything else he needs to look out for? also would an ecu from a mk2 16v work on a mk3 16v? any input greatly appreciated as i need to get to bottom of this.
-
Engine should run with or without maf connected, not sure about mk2 ecu.
-
id try unplugging the immobiliser and plugging it back in mine was similar and rac man did this and been fine since its a plug somewhere behind the dash
-
mk2 ecu wont work, and there is no maf sensor on a 16v.
There is only a map sensor in the ecu, and it wont work with this disconnected, or at least my mates 16v wouldnt when it had a gash in the map pipe. The vac line runs from the ecu to the inlet or chunky servo pipe non-return valve nipple, so check it hasnt fallen off or split.
if it was the imobilisor the car would run for a couple of seconds then cut out, so if it ran for longer than that but wouldnt rev then the issue is elsewhere. what year is it?
-
Sounds like an immobiliser problem to me.

the car did cut out just under a minute or so from when i got it to start but then it wouldn't rev. none of the pipes have fallen off or split hes checked them quite thoroughly. its a 1996.
so you all think it could be an immobiliser problem? how would i go about fixing this?

Surely it is was the immobiliser then it wouldn't start at all.
Get it on VAG com. It could be a dodgey crank or cam sender.

Ah i see its already been through diagnostics.
As Jon says there is no MAF sensor on the ABF engine, maybe they meant the MAP sensor is faulty?
-
basically the diagnostic fault that came out was that the fuel injection delivery time is too long. he says the normal time on it should be 16 m/bars p/s when mine is at 42 m/bars p/s
does anyone know a way to sort this out?

God knows, ecu or relay problems maybe
-
lol whatever it is, the car will not start at all. my mechanic says he hasn't come across anything like this before. mechanical wise its completely sound and should start as it should but there is something holding it back
-
I think maybe your ecu has died.
-
VAG-com should confirm ecu fault.
-
VAG-com should confirm ecu fault.
in most cases it doesnt.
Dont forget its the ECU thats giving out the fault codes, so if the ECU is shagged then its not necersarily going to give you the right data in the diagnostics

Couldn't tell you for sure.
I've had one case of a shagged ecu on a vr6, and it did show up on VAG-com.
-
if i change the ecu for another s/h one could i get it programmed to my car or do i need to change the ignition barrel and all the locks??
-
You can re-program the keys with VAG-com.
-
I would try the ecu and fuel injection relays first! They only cost about 12 quid each and dont show up on diagnostics!

im guessing these will be sold at gsf or kms? if so ill have a look tomorrow
-
all relays were checked and are fine. i've managed to find an ecu. do i need anything else to connect it up to my car? where can i take it to get it programmed?

Your local VW dealer or someone with Vagcom.

so all i need to do is plug the new unit in and get it programmed? no other parts needed? extra keys or whatever..? do you know how much it costs for the programming?

Not sure, but they should be able to recode your keys to suit.
