Title: Journey to your Mk 6 GTI
Post by: matchboy on 06 August 2009, 09:21
thought it would be interesting to know what cars you have all had before you got round to the new GTI!  yes, i am bored, and yes i'm thinking of sh1te to get me through another day of waiting to hear how long it is before i get my car!!

mine is:

Fiat Panda 750cc (utter joke, cost me £400 and the radio only worked if you had the heater on!!)
Seat Arosa 1.0L (over 4 years, not a thing wrong with it - great car - could run faster though!)
Golf Mk4 GTI 2.0L (great to drive, still slow - but like a rocket compared to the arosa!)
Alfa 147 1.9L JTD Lusso (could get 650 miles of one tank, lovely looking inside and out, drove like a pig in the wet!)
Golf Mk4 V5 (great fun, quick but drank more than oliver reed)
Ford Focus 2.0 TDI Titanium (a sofa on wheels, dull as you like but does the job)
Golf Mk 5 GTI (loved it, my favourite car by a mile, enjoyed driving every mile)
Audi A4 3.0 TDI Quattro S-Line (big but quick, love ripping up t0sser A3 drivers in it!)
& (Awaiting!) Golf Mk 6 GTI!!

Hmm, the GTI is good, but I'm not sure it's THAT good... 6 cyl, RWD...?
I can confirm the Mk6 Gti is better than a 135i coupe
1. Better ride
2. Sharper steering
3. More expensive looking interior
4. Better gearchange
5. Cheaper to buy and to run
There is only 1 thing the 135i is better---That engine goes like stink and sounds+feels like a normal aspirated car rather than turbo-charged

The GTi just feels like a better overall car as speed is not everything, the VXR was just mental it was as quick as a stabbed rat but simply does not have the build quality of the VW

Main cars worth mentioning are:
Mk2 Escort RS2000 (P/1975) - Fantastic gear change, less than 20mpg urban (which hurt when you're a student), got nicked after 2 weeks
Cavalier SRi (A/1983) - What can you say, nice
Mk2 Escort RS2000 (T/1978) - Again lasted two week, someone decided to crash into it and scarper (car was not registered in their name)
Mk3 Escort RS Turbo (C/1985) - Chipped, fantastic road holding, brakes very poor
Astra GTE (H/1991) - Bought from new, did over 200k miles without any hiccups, LED dashboard was a bit wierd
Kids came on the scene, so...
BMW E34 540i (N/1995) - First posh car
Jeep Cherokee CRD (03/2003) - Not good at all apart from when it snowed
BMW E39 530d Sport Touring (03/2003) - Back to some descent kit

When I was a student, a good friend had a brand new Mk1 GTI and I thought it was fantastic.  Couldn't afford one back in those days and have always promised that I would have one (eventually).  Love the new shape, ordered mine today!!!!!

Hopefully you wont be finding it dull in the mkVI, My evo VI was fun as hell untill it ended up upside down. Only thing i wont miss is the fuel bill

Red F reg Scirocco £1200 lasted a year or two until the leaks and a break-in meaning i couldn't lock the boot made me get rid of it (it was a money-pit anyway)

Green M reg Golf Match £3k (60bhp - i was seriously disappointed and the colour was rank)

P reg Beemer 316 compact £5k - heavily discounted as i bought from my gran's friend. 22k on the clock when i got it and pretty much new condition. great car but light grey cloth seats are never a good idea. no a/c was starting to be a problem!

55 Scooby Impreza WRX - brilliant all round. i've only done 30k in it in 4 years so the fuel consumption isn't a major issue for me. its a pain having to fill up twice on the way to cornwall, particularly if i leave after work and get to the sticks, out of fuel with the petrol stations starting to close. Only really reason i'm chaning is i want to go for an auto and the DSG/ S-tronic is the best available, with nice flappy paddles.

GTI on order (as below) plan to keep for about 6 years, hence going for the nuts
i really rather like the idea of an r20, so i'm hoping its going to be a lot more expensive, and awful on fuel.

if its near the £29k i'm paying with xenons, leather and the other options i'm going for i might be crying a little bit
Title: Re: Journey to your Mk 6 GTI
Post by: R32UK on 19 August 2009, 18:41
Thats a great spec DDarko!

I wouldnt worry about the R20.. its going to be alot more expensive than £29k. Also there is usually a couple of special editions released along the way (e.g. ed30) So should you want to chop yours in and change after 3/4 years you will probably still get a really good price for yours.

2009  Waiting for the Golf GTI MK6 2.0 to replace the 135i

Hmm, the GTI is good, but I'm not sure it's THAT good... 6 cyl, RWD...?
I can confirm the Mk6 Gti is better than a 135i coupe
1. Better ride
2. Sharper steering
3. More expensive looking interior
4. Better gearchange
5. Cheaper to buy and to run
There is only 1 thing the 135i is better---That engine goes like stink and sounds+feels like a normal aspirated car rather than turbo-charged

I would still take the 135i  :lipsrsealed:

I doubt you would in the winter!

Vauxhall Nova 1.2 - all the might of 45 hp and 4 speed!!!!! Totally reliable though.
Vauxhall Corsa 1.5 TD - the most reliable car I've ever owned to be honest.
Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 SRi - this was good too, or at least I thought so back then.
VW Golf GTi Mk3 - a cracker too
Peugeot 205 1.1 - our first "second" car for the wife. French, therefore, crap.
VW Golf TDi 110 Mk 4 - worst car I've ever had - 18 different faults on it at one stage. Absolute bag of s***.
VW Golf TDi 130 Mk 4 - great car that nearly killed me when wipers failed on three different occasions at high speed on various motorways. S*** dealers couldn't fix it so I got rid in favour of the Saab below while I still could. Swore at that time I would never set foot in a VW dealer again.
Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 - wife's car. Slow but relaible.
Saab 93 2.2 TD - only had it a short while but it was 100% reliable.
Vauxhall Vectra 2.2 TD - had to sell the Saab and get a cheap Vectra to be able to move house and get a mortgage. It was cheap and cheerful but never let me down
Vauxhall Atra 1.8 Convertible - wife's car. Again, excellent
Saab 1.9 TD(150) - had some problems in its fourth year which I thought it shouldn't have at that age. Otherwise a good workhorse.
Saab 93 TD(150) Convertible - wife's current car. Has been faultless and she loves it.
VW Golf GTi Mk 6 - totally in love with this car. Bit of a mid-life crisis car to be honest. On the verge of divorce cos she thinks I love it more than her. Which, of course, I do!!!!!
So overall nothing particularly glamorous for me but if this Mk 6 gives good service over the next 3 or 4 years then I will stay in the bosom of VW.

Nissan Micra 1.0 "Wave" - passed down from my mum to me during uni.  Faultlessly reliable for 75k, campest thing I've ever been in.

Seat Leon 1.6S - couldn't afford a nice Golf at the time.  Cracking car, despite a few electrical gremlins and being under-geared for the motorway.  Our relationship ended upside down in a field after slithering off a leafy back road.  Embarrassing.  :embarassed:

Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec "Chic" - worked for Ford at the time, so a major discount.  Absolutely fabulous car, looked great as a 3dr in dark grey, perfect reliability for 90k, managed to sell it on just before bits started to fall off it.

Audi A3 2.0TDI SE - pool car whilst I waited for my company car (below).  No long-term relationship formed...

Audi A3 2.0TDI (140) S-line - black with leather and big wheels.  Not sure whether I should admit to liking it on this board.  But I do...despite the awful low-speed ride and the clunky PD motor.  Great for motorways, and for looking like a smug Audi-driving so-and-so...

Mk 6 Golf GTD - order being placed with my fleet manager this week, to replace the A3.  I'll miss the Audi interior and leather, but the new engine and looks will make up for that.  It even seems to go over potholes without hurting my back...

mk1 Scirocco GTI (insurance cost a third of the car's value!)
mk1 Golf GTI (most troublesome car I ever had)
Pug 205 GTI 1.9 (huge fun but crap build, rattly and problematic)
mk2 Golf GTI 8v (dull compared to the former but much better built)
mk2 Golf GTI 8v (big bumper, got really attached to this car then sold it on a whim )
Polo G40 (really, really regret selling this one)
Golf VR6 (lovely noise but the rest of the car a bit over-rated)
Saxo VTS (skeleton in my closet this one, in my defence it was bought when they were first launched and getting lots of press plaudits. Oh how wrong journos can be, only kept it a few months and well before they became Chav-mobiles)
Ibiza TDI mk2 (decided I'd experiment with Diesel tuning as was doing a few more miles at the time)
Polo Genisis (took it in p/x against the Ibiza, only kept it a fortnight)
mk2 Golf GTI 8v (tidy low miler bought when I spotted it cheap in the paper. Got shot of it when I went down with glandular fever and couldn't manage the non assisted steering!)
mk2 Polo 1.3 (bought for commuting and running kids about)
Golf VR6 (just fancied another one)
Ibiza TDI mk3 (got fed up with fuelling the VR6)
mk2 Golf GTI 16V (bought on a whim for a cheap fun runabout)
Leon Cupra (much better value than a mk4 Golf GTI at the time)
mk3 Polo GT (bought off a mate when the mk2 Polo got sick)
Ibiza TDI mk4 (just couldn't fall in love with this car so only had it a few months)
Golf GTI 1.8T
Fabia vRS
mk5 Golf TDI (couldn't afford a mk5 GTI)
mk7 Polo GTI 1.8T (huge fun with REVO but hurt my back)
mk5 Golf GTI (excellent car when re-mapped, really good all rounder)
mk2 Ibiza GTI (commuting car bought when the Polo GT got sick)
....and finally my mk6 GTI bought for the hell of it as I want a car to keep for a good few years after lots of chopping and changing. Hopefully it'll keep me amused for a good while as it's by far the most expensive car I've ever bought.

I think that's all of them anyway. Jeez, no wonder I live in a crap house when I think about the depreciation on most of that lot!

My first post I think after several weeks of reading about these GTI thingies :-) Had a test drive in a Mk6 GTI manual a few weeks back and I'm 99% convinced it'll be the car for me. A recent test drive in an A4 confirmed just how good the GTI is. So, I'm not planning to order for a few weeks, hope no-one minds me butting in here and posting up my list of completely non-GTI type cars that have brought me to this point :-)

'81 X Triumph Acclaim - my first car, lovely twin-carb honda motor 1990-92
'86 D Rover 213 - bit of a mistake in hindsight, another lovely honda motor in a rust bucket body, still a decent reliable car 1992-95
'91 H Citroen BX16 - fantastic piece of gallic quirkiness. super comfy cruiser. 1995-99
'89 F Toyota Carina II 2.0 16v - another mistake, unreliable, but went like stink when working, 1999-2001
'00 X Ford Mondeo 1.8 LX - it's a mondeo, nuff said, no power, great handling, disintegrating interior & trim, 2001-2006
'06 56 Toyota Avensis 2.2 D4-D - super motorway car to do 20k a year in, excellent interior & kit, doesn't like corners, 2006-????

Planning a holiday early in the new year, after that the Avensis will be going (don't want the new car sitting in an airport car park for weeks on end before I have even had the chance to enjoy it).

Cheers for the welcome  I did think my list might prove unusual  :embarassed:
My cars used to do fairly low mileage as I worked locally, so wasn't worth spending much cash. Also had other priorities for money when I was younger  That BX was a peach though, Citroen have lost their way badly since then . Have commuted 60 miles a day for the last few years, so put the emphasis on motorway cruising. But it's time for something a bit more B-road capable I think....

Yep, I reckon it should. I wanted a Mk2 back in the day, but insurance was the issue. The Mk6 is the first one since that has the same appeal to me, the Mk5 wasn't far off of course but I was convinced I needed a diseasal back then
