Alryt guys i know you all probably fix ur cars urself but, has anyone been quoted a price to fix the ignition timing problem on mk3 8v gtis? if so is there anywhere reputable that would do it for a reasonable price around chester area?
i know you need to reset the ecu aswel but not sure how much it would be coz i know squat about engines and dnt wana get screwed on the price! cheers..

Just needs the cambelt doing really.
Seems stupid to do all the work and not change the cambelt.
They need to strip it all down and re-time the engine.
£200 maybe? :undecided:
-
thanks, it did have a cambelt change at 51000 miles tho and mileage currently 70k? would it need the cambelt replacing again? :undecided: soz, am fik lool
-
Well, not really, it will have another 30K left in it atleast, but there is honestly no point in letting them do all that work and not spend another £30 on a cambelt kit which won't be any more labour for them to fit.
You could try taking the battery out for a while and see if that clears it.
-
yeah that makes sense. cheers fella.
-
No probs.

first off, whats wrong with the timing? if its just the ignition timing that is out, there should be no reason to change the cambelt, or even go near the thing. how i would go about it is
1. get the fault codes read off the ecu, and then get the ecu cleared
2. get the ignition timing checked, run it for a bit, get the ecu re-read and checked for faults, if that fixes it, then all is well! if not
3. get the garage to check the cambelt timing, to make sure it isnt a tooth out or something silly
i wouldnt expect to pay more than an hours labour to get those things checked out

hi my 8v did the same, pretty much at the same time it started crunching into 3rd. now the whole gbox is dead and im fitting a new 1 today so if sorts it i will let you know. some people say its timing and ignition but its a safe mode and the only problem i had with the car was the gbox so there was nothing else for it to protect if you get me? i will let you know if the new gearbox and clutch stops it.

How do you know you have an ignition timing problem, more info please?
-
well im gonna guess it revs fine to 5k? usual timing symptoms are ill idling, freak rev drops or gains, backfire, loud tapping wen the valves close at the wrong time.
-
Ok. first of all you need to check your basic cam and ignition timing. Align the bottom pulley to the mark on the plastic cover, then check that the mark on the cam pulley is aligned with the mark on the head, then remove dizzy cap and check that the rotor is aligned with the mark on the dizzy. This may help you with the marks.

So much bullsh!t in this thread its unreal. I'm assuming the car has only recently started doing this... and if that is the case then it cant be the timing, unless its suddenly managed to jump a tooth on the pulley...
Theres a sticky all about this above in the maint section...
1.Check your ecu relays and fuel pump relays...These are a common fault on the mk3
2.Clean out your throttle body make sure its not all gunked up
3.Disconnect the battery and let the ecu reset..
4.If you still have the issue then its possibly the crank position sensor, this is located on the front of the engine block, its got a single allen head holding it on.. about 40 quid to replace...
-
The o/p is convinced that the ignition/valve timing is out for whatever reason, so it seems logical not bullsh!t to me especially as it is a simple matter to check that the marks line up if for no other reason than to put the o/ps mind at rest.

ignition timing does not just go.. hes done 19k miles with it working fine and now theres an issue, this does not point towards the timing belt being 1 tooth out to me...

I see what has happened here turbosteve has hyjacked the thread two different vehicles with two different sets of symptoms.

well ok, i will let you off then
