Title: been offerd a VR6......
Post by: phatsam2003 on 05 August 2009, 19:40
Yo mk3 maniacs

I would appreciate some advice.

I've been offered a K reg VR6 for 800 notes

Only done 85k and looks quite tidy, just needs a polish and some bumper bright. Service history up until 75k, all old MOT's and tax discs. No rust!

But........

The guy said it's hesitant when running cold. It starts fine but wont rev past 5k and hesitates. Once it warms up it's fine and pulls all the way up in all gears.

He said he found some dirt around the petrol cap, and thinks someone might have put dirt in the fuel tank. So could be because the fuel filter is clogged. Sounds a bit odd to me but hey.

Any advise would be appreciated

Sam

Sounds cheap for a vr6 does it have an mot?

Not revving past 5K is normally the ECU in safe mode, normally timing but I don't know the VR6 engines.

buy a fuel filter, go and swap it out and see if it runs ok, if you really think that's what it is.

Could be fuel issues, as above replace the filter and go from there.

Yea its got an MOT till october, he originally had it up for 1250 but reduced it cos he had no interest at all.

ECU safe mode was my first thought, but he said after it warms up it revs all the way to the limiter, which I thought was rather strange. Personally I don't think it's a clogged fuel filter, it's what he thinks. Only reason he didn't change it was because he couldn't find it.

Would VAG COM pick anything up?

Yes it might do, could be a number of things causing it.

I woudnt just take his word for it though, take it for a test run and see what you think.

Could be things like dodgy temp sensors making the ECU go in safe mode.

Doubt if its in safe mode if its revving once hot.

If it is only doing it when cold then the problem is in the warm up circuit (cold start) I would think.

Yes but when it warms up it can come out.

I've seen similar things on other cars.

Not saying it is, but it could be.  :undecided:

Cool, cheers for the help.

What ever it is, would you say it was an expensive/big problem? say worst case scenario.

Might go take a gander and have a test drive anyway. wouldn't hurt

How long is a piece of string, could be something simple and cheap or could be a living nightmare hence why he is selling up.

If its just lumpy on cold, but will go if u ragg the balls of it.

Could just be a blocked up vac hose, breather hose, or sh!tty throttle body.

My 8v is the same.

It is worth a gamble if cheap enough.

Already on the check list

Had that on my old 1.6

I think he may be persuaded to go lower, seeing as he's had no interest at all. He only lives 30 seconds away as well.

Ok so went to have a look earlier, wasnt too bad. Body work was pretty good for the year. The cold running problem he was talking about seemed to be non existent!! but he seemed to think there was something wrong so I wasn't going to disagree  He reckoned it hesitated when taking it over 5 grand when cold. All I could really think was why the hell would you want to take it over 5 grand when its cold!!!

Only thing was on the test drive, it didn't seem to pull much harder than my 8v GTi.

That can't be right, can it????

exactly what I thought

strange

seemed a nice car apart from that, especially for the year. No rust to speak of what so ever.
