Title: Clutch slipping
Post by: Tubb on 05 August 2009, 18:00
Hi all,

My clutch started slipping earlier in the year so i replaced it with a new Sachs around March time.
It was fine up until about a week ago when i noticed it slipping in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears at around 4500rpm when the cam picks up - this is what the old clutch did.
I thought it might have been the cable that needed adjusting so tried that but it didnt make any difference.
Now today its started slipping in every gear and an any rpm

Is it likely that the cable is causing it to slip (i have a spare one in the garage) or is there anything else it could be?
The oil seals have be changed and its a MK1 020 gearbox.

Typical that it would happen as im supposed to be driving around europe all weekend

Thanks in advance

Well, the cable would cause it to slip if it was not releasing properly. You need to have about 5mm free play between the cable end and the release arm to ensure the pedal pressure is completely off. Any oil leaks from the clutch housing? Did you replace the pressure plate with the clutch? The flywheel surface may be 'glazed'.........or worn too deeply.   :undecided:

Crankcase oil seal failed and coating the clutch with oil maybe.

Yes i replaced the pressure plate, friction disc and bolts which came as a kit. Flywheel also looked fine

This has been replaced by a previous owner and there we no signs of oil when i changed the clutch 6 months ago.

It just seems strange that all of a sudden its started slipping when it been fine for 6 months. same as the old clutch, was fine and then suddenly started slipping.

Ive got a new clutch cable in the garage so il try and change that tomorrow afternoon

did you replace the pushrod brass bush & seal, plus the input shaft seal? if not it might be gearbox oil thats leaked onto the clutch
