Title: Mk2 16v gearbox leakage

Been away on Hols for 3weeks.
Come home and the gearbox is leaking fluid from the bottom leaving a patch approx 15in square. It also seems to be damp round where the speedo cable goes.

Don't even know how it started while it was not being driven, but anyway.

Have tightened the bolts up underneath but does anyone have the torque wrench settings?

Any suggestions as to how to resolve the issue? Do I have to pull gearbox to replace gaskets? Well annoyed as was looking forward to going for a thrash this evening :sad:

The m12 bolts should be 75Nm or 55 lbf ft and the m10 bolts should be 45Nm or 33lbf ft and yeh to replace the gasket you will have to seperate thegearbox from the engine.

Is the leak definately from the block/box mating face? If so its likely to be the input shaft seal thats gone. Tightening the bolts between the box and block is gonna do nothing as that face isnt used for sealing (if it was, you would have a very oily clutch which isnt the norm for cars lol) and Id be surprised if theres even a gasket inbetween the two.

Feck, there was me hoping for a cheap easy solution...

Looking from the front of the car underneath it goes block, bit with clutch in it, gearbox. Seems the leak is coming from the joint between bit with clutch in and gearbox. Clearish yellow liquid that looks like new oil.

Hope I haven't blinded everyone with my technical jargon... :embarassed:

Would people suggest a reconditioned box? Or what would a garage take to replace gaskets? Box doesn't crunch or anything totally slick but I'm not driving it for fear of doing any damage.

If it is deffo gear oil, then you will need to remove the box and split it.

Joy, I was wanting to fit coilovers this week, but looks like I'll be fiddling with the sodding gearbox seals... :angry:

Had a look online for info, anyone got a link for guide replacing gearbox seals? Be able to get seals from a motofactor I assume.

you'll know about it if its gearbox oil, the smell is 'unique'  if its engine oil it could just be the sump gasket, or the crank seal.

I bought some new drive shaft seals from VW recently, they only cost me £22 which I thought was good, turned out once I'd split the box that the diff and two gears, 4th and 5th were fooked so I've opted to buy a recon box  instead :sad:

If your going to remove the gearbox its worth getting a gear shift rebuild kit and doing that while the box is out.

I'll inspect the crank seal, just changed the oil recently and have ensured that it's not from the sump plug. Like I mentioned in original posting the speedo cable housing on the gearbox seems, moist...
