Title: Possible new car. (SHED)
Post by: johnson6672 on 05 August 2009, 12:13
Going to have a look at this tomorrow, what do you guys think, not a bad price a a 16v i thought.

http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/msn/CARS_popup.jsp?modelexact=1&partner=msn&lid=search_used_cars_full&make=VOLKSWAGEN&model=GOLF&variant=GTI&keywords=&min_pr=75&max_pr=&mileage=&agerange=&photo=1&postcode=SP9+7PR&miles=100&max_records=50&source=0&sort=3&ukcarsearch_full=FIND+IT+NOW%21&start=5&distance=34&adcategory=CARS&channel=CARS&id=200931338824734

Went have a look, what a shed, gap filler behind the bumpers, paint was rough as, all tyres were on the wear indicators and the back were nankangs , so the search continues, just spoke to a guy about a red driver on a J £395 and may have 12months MOT he is going to let me know.

Check the condition of the shell very carefully. Make sure it doesn't burn oil, and that gearbox is all ok, most other things can be fixed reasonably cheaply. Ask of he has any advisorys from previous MOTs ?

Thats what i was thinking, getting an 8v next tuesday so really wanted a 16v aswell instead of having two 8v's. Like the colour aswell, i am trying to avoid getting another red (pink) mk2.

Spoke to the guy this morning and he admitted that 2nd gear is a bit troublesome, but this doesn't worry me too much as i am a mechanic by trade anyway.

that's likely to be syncromesh, but changing a box shouldn't be a problem for you....

looks nice, not so keen on the painted arches and bumper top trim tho. Each to their own i guess.

He also says no big rust patches or dents/scratches and then further down he says dents and scratches.
just be wary of the repaint and check for signs of filling etc

also so you could haggle, Couple of things to bargain with. The drivers door does not sit right and it has odd side repeaters. you would have to pay to fix so try knocking it off the price.

I'm not keen on the painted arches and bumper tops either.

The bumpers look non genuine as the dont seem to fit very well, and if you change it back to small bumpers as it should be, who knows what you will find underneath.

I would rather spend that sort of money on an honest, un-modded car. At least you should be sure of a good base to start from.

Cheers guys, al noted, i am not worried about work on it welding or other, all can be done for free, especially as i have just done some work on my mates car for him for free and he is a top knotch metalsmith, will have a look and see what i can get him down too.
anyone know anywhere else that is a good place to look for a 16v, looked on piston heads and auto trader, going to get the golf mag on friday and see what is in there.
Really want to get a 16v has i have an 8v coming next week thanks to martz.
Although at some point i do want to do an abf conversion on one of them.

don't forget to enquire about when the cambelt was last changed it should be done about every 40k on one of these, being a mechanic ull know what happens when they snap,
also if you can check all round the filler neck including on the inside of the rear panel under the wheelarch just coz u can't see rust dosnt mean it's not there, there is a guide on what to look for when buying a mk2 on here so use the search function and good luck buy with your head not with your heart.

It really hacks me off when people state the problems with the car they're selling, then mention something along the lines of "easy fix", "quick fix", " £2 part from vw".

If it's so easy, what sort of impression are you giving if you cant even be bothered to do such 'easy' fixes before putting it up for sale - hardly inspires confidence that the motor has been looked after.
Either that or its not such a cheap or easy fix as they make out (more likely).

Well may not bother with that one, found a royal blue mk2 with 2.0l abf needs disc and pads and slight exhaust blow sorting for MOT, going to look tomorrow.

Plus its only just up the road from me.
other one was 1 1/2  hour drive away.

easy fixes,But if it was yours wouldn't you not just do them and mot it????.It would fetch more that way,I would have a proper look round that one.Maybe a bargain but may also be a money pit

The easy fix one 1.8 driver, the guy got back to me, had gone for an MOT, failed on 1x brake flexi hose, he is getting that fixed tomorrow and putting 12 months mot on it, but it is too far really so going to have a look at the one that is just round the corner from me, 2.0l abf, needs brakes doing and a slight exhaust blow sorting but apart from that should be ok i hope. will have to see tomorrow.
