Title: Hi there. new menber here, needing a little advice
Post by: meljames24 on 04 August 2009, 21:07
Hi there, I have a G reg Mk2 GTI and this afternoon, I believe, the heater matrix failed as I was driving along then all of a sudden, steam was coming out of the central blowers and steaming water in my passenger footwell.
I've spoken to 2 mechanics on the phone and they both mentioned the matrix failing. One suggested a bypass but that would then mean no heater in the car... I cannot afford to have it refitted as the same guy suggested that it would cost in the region of around £200. I guess the car isn't worth much more than that anyway. But doing the bypass means it'd only cost around £50.  I can cope with the cold for the sake of £150.
However, once the bypass has been done, can it be reversed? My boyfriend is pretty niffty in the mechanical department, and others, but is away for a couple of weeks and I need this doing asap. He could probably, with a little convincing, replace said matrix in the winter time. Is this do-able. my  Haynes manual doesn't really go into detail about it.
Also does any one else have a problem with their exhaust rubbers? I've had to replace mine twice in 12 months. I blame speed bumps.
I hope you can help as my Golf isn't ready, and I'm not willing to let him go for the big sleep yet.
