When it starts, does it belch out black smoke from the exhaust?

Does it do it when the engine is warm, or straight from cold?

Have you ever run it out of juice?

Does it start ok first thing in the morning?

Check all the vaccume hose connections, as the braded rubber hose's fail after a while,
I am not sure on the latest K-jetronic systems, but the idle air control valve may be stuck, the temp sensor for the warm up valve may be on the blink, the pressure regulator may be knackered too. (sorry the list is loooong)

Or, when was the last time you had it serviced?  It could just be knackered plugs/leads etc?

Cheers

kraM

Could also be the fuel pump relay or maybe even the old rusty filler neck.

To check the fuel relay, take the relay out (I think it's the top left relay, but could be wrong) and look at the connections, if it's full of melted black from your fuse box then sandpaper the connections, put back in and see what happens. Then always carry some sandpaper in the car just in case.

did the after market fuel pump come with an accumulator as what you have sounds like a residual pressure problem

the accumulator sits between high pressure pump and metering head and once engine is warm and switched off the accumulator holds the pressure inthe system to allow sufficent fuel at the injectors to fire when hot, if there is insufficent pressure the heat from the engine will vaporize what little fuel there is in the actual injector lines so causing the hot start problem

does it eventually fire after after alot of cranking?

it will start ok from cold as the cold start valve compensates for the low pressure

hope the above helps but ask rubjohnny as he's the mk1 guru who told me the above info which solved my problem

need to get a pressure gauge on it to confirm if its an accumulator problem, but it does sound liek that could be it. might be leaky injectors too?

your injectors are leaking into the combustion chambers and flooding the engine / spark plugs are getting wet .
start the car wait for fans to kick in swich off engine wait the normal time  remove spark plug and see if it is wet
