hey guys, long time no post on here, I have been far to busy working and driving my 1971 1302s.
Any hoo, I got in the 1996 MK3 GTi 16v last night after work, and for some reason the warning light for the handbreak has come on and stays on.
I tried the breaks and they are all working and the handbreak seems fine, but the warning light wont go off.
When I was driving the light seemed to flicker on and off, but eventually it always comes back on, this started yesterday and I have never noticed it before, and the car is driven regularly..... any ideas?

check the fluid level
-
Release the handbrake.

hello i had that problem,it mite be the switch wot is faulty or switched off. if u remove the ashtray in the back there shud be 2 screws unscrew and lift cover to see the hand brake on the side there shud be a switch. it will either be faulty switch or wiring.try turning on and off to see if it makes any def.......or u need to get brake fulid. hope this helps!!!! let me know how u get on.

As above but check that the switch is adjusted properly before you go buying another one.
-
also attached to the low break fluid switch check its on the brake fluid cap

Release the handbrake.

Does the ABS work and does the ABS warning light work?
I think the warning light you're talking about comes on if you have more than 1 ABS fault, so if the actual ABS light doesn't work (think people usually disconnect this rather than fixing ABS!) and you have a fault you may have just developed another one...

How much does a new switch cost usually?

Check the abs light comes on and off when u start the car.
If it dont i reckon the bulb is out and u have a duff sensor, and now there is a 2nd fault with it.

Checked it last night, low fluid.
I topped it up, went for a spin and the light has now gone out!
Cheers guys!

I had the same issue but had too much fluid.
