should come on at around 3/4 on gauge, see the coolant faq on tips on testing all the different parts of the cooling system

Check your PAS and alt. belts. I had that smell and my alternator belt kept flipping out of the V and upside down   I didn't bother fixing it because it failed the MOT not long after  :lipsrsealed:

Sorry to jump in here btw, but my fan also comes on quite often, especially if i've been darting around town - although temp gauge never gets to half way... is my gauge bust or is that normal? I have a 16V and I understand they run hot.  :undecided:

It can't do any harm can it?
My 1.6's fan used to come on quiet a lot last year summer time, I knew this because the fan was buggered and made a racket and sounded like the engine was failing

the gauge could be under-reading, what does the oil temp say? could be the fan switch is cutting in a bit early too. or you may have the after-run system fitted and the wire has fallen off and is earthing to the engine. its a single pin sensor with a black wire, on the inlet somewhere

Ill check oil temp on next run rubjonny , Its a november 91 8v digi if that makes any difference , ,Sorry no good with motors so may struggle to find inlet mate

Mine comes in at 82 degrees on the oil temp, or is it 92  :undecided:

82 oil temp is just warmed up, 92 would be more like it but still a bit cool
edit: though there can be a difference between oil & water temps, but 92 is still a fair bit cooler than i would expect for the fan to kick in

disconnect the plug from the header tank level sensor and bridge the pins, see if that stops it.  if so check the level, if its ok you probably need a new tank. if it doesnt then either the temp sensor is playing up or the dash clocks

OK , Thanks so header tank is where i put water in for cooling system yeah ?

How do i bridge pins - Excuse my ignorance  :embarassed: :embarassed:

If we are talkin same tank it looks pretty new

If i need new temp sensor where is that ??

if it was the clocks ( Have been replaced my low mileage ones by PO ) why would this make engine so hot and smell so hot ??

Sorry for all questions Johnny but i know nothing about engines but feel this is a problem that needs addressing quickly , Thanks ALOT for your help

yeah it is, to bridge the pins pop the plug off and put a bit of wire between the pins, on the plug obv not the header tank ;)
the temp sensor is the black 2 pin one in the flange on the front of the head, the clocks wouldnt make the engine run too hot, however engines do smell a bit when warm especially if say they are coated with oil due to leaky gaskets, or if oil is leaking onto the exhaust manifold :)
