Title: Gearbox Help
Post by: th3_f15t on 03 August 2009, 09:10
Hey. My GTi 8v has the usuall 2nd and 5th gear problems where it sometimes struggles to get into gear, but once in gear it's fine. How would I go about sorting that out?

And also, if you go along in first, take your foot off the throttle at low speeds, the car lurks forwards badly, is that engine and/or gearbox mounts going out the window? Got 2 new engine mounts on order currently...

Any advice/comments/abuse welcome.

The problems with getting the car into gears is probably your linkage, the bushes get worn and it makes it really hard to select gears, specially if your gearstick feels like a custard stirrer? this is easily solved by replacing the bushes and the rods, you can buy a gear linkage kit from B+B components (they have a store on ebay) they are a very good company and i have bought the kit myself and fitted it and it makes the gear change much much better, you will also get a new gearstick bush, this is abit harder to change but will make your gear change nice and tight again,as for the lurching this is probably down to broken engine mounts, mine used to do this and it was the gearbox mount that had failed not expensive to buy unless you go for a vibratech one, also might be worth changing the oil in the gearbox aswell and checking you have no crunching, whirring etc coz if its the gearbox at fault then the things ive mentioned here will not help.
if it is the gearbox your looking at about 500 quid for an exchange or bowt 700 quid for a rebuild (unless you wanna buy one from ebay but you can never be sure its ok untill its in the car.) and if you are gonna change the gearbox then may aswell get a new linkage and gearbox mount anyway. hope this helps

Thanks for that. Other than sometimes throwing a wobbly and not going into gear, there's no sounds from the gear box, still pulls fine through all gears. Will try and get a gearbox mount if the engine ones don't solve the problem. Cheers mate.

Think I'll buy that kit you recomended, looks good for under £10! Also, where can I find what grade of gearbox oil to use in mine? AUG coded gearbox on a 1.8 8 valve GTi (PB engine)?

VW oil is pretty cheap, or there is redline MTL which is the bees knees, but quite expensive
