Title: Play in power steering rack

Hi, my MK3 has just been through its MOT and passed but I got given an advisory stating slight play in nearside of power steering rack.

Just wondered how big of a job it is to sort this out...and also if anyone knows a rough cost that would be great.

New / recon rack would be the only cure in the end.

Sorry to be a pain but ive got one last question....once ive bought the rack do you have any idea how many hours labour i should expect to have it fitted?!

Hi i have a mkiv Golf and i have recently had to have a new rack as the interior seals had split and had the power steering fluid shooting out of the gatiors. Luckly i my step mum is freinds with people from unipart automotive and i got a recon steering rack for £160 it should have been £260!. Next was labour smaller garages would not touch the steering rack change because it is such a big job as it envolves taking the sub frame out of the mkiv not sure if it is the same on the mkiii! Well luckly she also knew a vw mechanic that does jobs on the side so talked to him and he done it for £100 as around 2-3 hours work.

I was curious as to what vw would quote and came back with £600 including parts! i got it for just under £260

However i have just had my mot and guess what! it faild on excessive play in the steering rack and found the problem to be the arm that carries the rack on the drivers side! Got the part cheap new at £11.50 (discount) and me bloke did it for £20 pounds ideal ... check that before you go shelling out on a new rack mate!
