...driving my mk3 today had a sudden loss of power steering and i think blurt of black cack out the back....seemed to happen with a squeely noise too...stopped car and it started again and drove fine. In Glasgow happened again with more squeely noices and a rubbery smell....sure there was smoke from bonnet too but couldnt find any evidence!
any ideas :( not that technically minded as you can tell!! (oil and coolant levels fine, power steering level fine too)

Check your power steering pump belt something has happened to it. Its on the left hand side of the engine. (airbox side).
-
if i was you id drop the belt off and make sure all the pulleys turn freely just to make sure notings jamming.also inspect the belt for any signs of slipping.you dont want to be losing your steering mid corner.
-
is this easy to do? any good guides? haynes is not the best!
-
Visual inspection first if been smoking etc damage should be obvious. Let us know what you see, but I would get another belt anyway
-
I agree with these guys.
inspect it for any damage. replace belt. cheap and easy enough. like they say, dont want to loose steering in mid corner
-
thanks guys :) inspected the belt and a few of the teath look fecked :( had new belt from halfords but way too long must be wrong one! VW on monday! for new one
-
Shouldnt be any teeth on power steering belt cambelt has teeth if its that dont start the engine. Pictures would help.

-
update : changed the belt for new one fitted new adjuster bolt too as this was knackered....still getting an odd noise though when turning right....fine left and straight on though.... any ideas.....sub 20 mph no noise and fine just seems noisier faster speed....
-
Yes thats the power steering belt, just make sure its at the correct tension.
-
checked the haynes manual and its says deflection of about 5mm? wonder if its a bit tight.....
-
If its too tight it puts a strain on the pump bearing but its only if its too slack that it will squeal on full lock
-
sounds like mine too tight then? :undecided:darn! gonna have to dismantle and re assess?
-
fingers crossed loosening the belt a little has fixed it :) cheers for all the help guys its much appriciated!
