So today my gf dragged her brolly down the rear panel, nice scratch grrr. Not too bad I thought, used some t-cut and some JML sh!te (never I repeat never use this!) and this has happened to the paint  It's kind of burnt through but still smooth to touch.

How much roughly would be a good price to fix this? Would the whole panel need to be sprayed? Was hoping I may get away with just the top half.
What do you reckon? Cheers

stick up in the detailing section mate, but looks like you have taken all the paint off
-
JML sh!t is nasty nasty stuff!
Sorry - mods can this be moved please
edit - cheers mods
-
is that primer?!
-
Easy, but not a cheap fix, you can get away with locally re colouring where it's rubbed through, then re lacquering up to the edges, and along the swage line that runs from the rear window, to the rear light, using "soft edge masking foam" It could be done with rattle cans, but a bodyshop should easily be able to put it back to perfect for about 3hrs labour, and £60 paint/matrials

F@ck me mate, that looks like strike through ! How hard were you rubbing :undecided:
-
Not hard at all! I don't know if I had a tube of duff scratch remover or something, it was very liquidy rather than paste. I'm just f**king glad I stopped when I did.
Cheers for the advice, going to have to pay out for this one then

Erm.....

on a car of that age you should be extremely carefull when rubbing with any product, the paint will be very thin and wont take much to rub off completely, you would of been ok if it was metalic with a clearcoat. take it down to a bodyshop or a reputable sprayer and they should be able to blend that back in
maybe you should sticky this thread guy

 Ain't that the truth. In fairness she felt so bad she was the one who bought me the JML sh!te. I was reading on another forum that exactly the same thing happened with it to another guys car. Ah well live and learn. Let my mistake be a warning to you all
Bodyshop wanted £160 odd to sort it out.
-
thats a joke dude, thats an expensive body shop
-
Really? I figured that was probably the going rate. I'm waiting for a couple more quotes to come back before I go forward.
edit - just had a quote from another place in the post this morn. They want £380 to sort it and fix a minor dent in the rear quarter. F*ck that!
-
correct me if im wrong but your paint isnt metalic, the patch in question doesnt look that big and could be blended in with little to no hassle, obviously it would need preping but its only a small area and could be blended quite easy.
-
Primer patch isn't that large but the scratch goes right down to the middle of the panel.
The prices I have had from bodyshop one were £160 for the patch and scratch blending in and then lacquering the whole panel or £230 to do all of that plus removing the trolley dent and painting that. Would need the car 3 days and can't do it until October.
Or bodyshop two which was £380 for the scratch, patch, dent and they wanted to spray the whole rear boot plint too. Would also need the car 3 days.
Think I need some more quotes. Anyone recommend a good bodyshop in west wiltshire area? Not had to get anything like this sorted before so don't really know a good price.
-
ok didnt realise you were having other bits sorted dude my bad
but  laquer on non metalic paint???
-
Please excuse my ignorance but doesn't all paint need lacquer as a finishing coat?
Bodyshop one did imply that it would be fine to fade it in and bodyshop 2 seemed to think I'd need the whole panel done which I guess is why there is a dramatic difference in pricing. I'm going to visit a couple more places tomorrow and see what they say I think.
Cheers for all advice btw, it is appreciated as I am clueless on paint.
-
non metalic paint doesnt have laquer, bodyshop 2 could be saying the whole panel needs doing because your original paint might be faded compared to what it was when it was originaly sprayed and is harder to get an exact colour match, and bodyshop 1 are either well confident of a colour match or there just eager to get the work.
ask both bodyshops if you can see any of there previous work, and go from there.
-
Will do. Both shops seemed confident of a match despite it being an older car. I don't think work is an issue with the cheaper place as I couldn't get in until October.
-
Happier today - found a place quite local to me. Just been over to have a look and they seem sound enough. Proper spray booth and do classic car restorations too.
£120 odd for the repair to the rear panel, dent removed and sprayed. Seems like a better price to me
-
nice one dude  get some pics up when its done.
-
Got the car back yesterday. Very happy with the results. Only flaw I can find is the front wing has a small run but ah well, plenty good enough for me. Colour match is fooking good

looks good dude  the rear quarter will need ultra fine wet sanding and mopping once the paint has hardened off to get rid of the orange peel
