Title: Faulty shock absorber?
Post by: GregUK on 01 August 2009, 16:01
Hi

I'm after a bit advice about a problem I've just noticed on my wife's Lupo. The top mount of one of the rear shock absorbers is protruding 10cm further than it should into the boot, almost as if it has hyperextended. Is this a sign that the shock absorber has failed, or is there another component that is supposed to limit the upward travel of the shock?

Out of interest, I removed it to test. The shock still retains it's damping properties and doesn't appear to have leaked any fluid.

Thanks

Sounds like the top place or mount has failed. You should be able to tell if you have it in bits.

I've just had a look on ETKA and there's a "snap ring" which fits to the groove which is visible in my photo.

Could it be something as simple as that?

Seen that before on a Polo the snap ring had failed.

Yes it is that.

Happened to mine a while back. Get it done as soon as possible, as it will strain the other and will need to get both done.

Garages can replace just the snap ring if you ask them too, or just drop the rear out and do it yourself.

Thanks for your help, everyone. I'll get a couple of these ordered.
