Hi all i changed my gearbox last night and now the car wont start, Thought it was the starter motor as it was locked solid, took that out and it all seemed fine, Then i noticed a puddle of fuel around the air filter housing.
Ive took the air filter off and the inlet manifold was pouring fuel out, so i thought id better take the plugs out to clear the bores and a 3ft blast of fuel came out No4 plug hole.
I have absolutley no idea whats causing this but my fuel pump used to prime then stop but now its just on constanly, is this my problem???
I'm going to try now to change the relay but im a bit worried as my mrs drives the car alot.
Any help, suggestions would be great as i need it running again asap.
Cheers, Mike

I'll take a guess and say your car is a digifant 8v? what you have done is fry your ecu, check the gearbox earth! if the connection is missing or dirty this is what happens :(
-
Yep it was missing, tried a new relay and nothing, but i do have a spark.
Is this a comment thing then??
-
it is - i managed to miss the earth off as it was ihdden behind my battery - looked for any loose connections etc and didnt notice it in the stress/heat of the moment and fried my ecu.. new ones available on ebay all the time for pennies compared to breakers prices!
-
I've got an 8v ecu if you want it, it came off a running car. You can just send me a self addressed padded envolope or somthing (because I'm lazy) if you want and ya can have it for free?
-
That is very kind of you, i've been on the phone all day today to many vw breakers in the midlands area but no-one seems to have one or be bothered to look, there appears to be about 50 different part numbers/types of 8v ecu, Mine is a digifant 2 with th part number 037 906 022 DB, Do you know the part number of yours??
There is one on ebay now but ive been e-mailing the owner and had no response. Im without a car now and ive been told i have to flush theoil out twice to avoid premature engine failure.
-
ive fitted diffrent part number ecu's to mine. all worked.
That free ECU is nice of the man
-
So could i just try any ecu off a mk2 8v?? Im intrigued? Would it cause any damage?? I dont want to cause any damage as the car is immaculate, or was lol.
And yes it was very nice of the man, But i'll be sure to add a nice drink!

ok im still searching the forum trying to find ways around my problem, ive been offered a superchip for my ecu and have been told this will fix my problem, does anyone know the truth in this??
Would me changing the chip fix my problem??
-
I'd stop wasting time and get a SAE in the post to the kind man ASAP
-
Done!!

Likely to be an utter waste of time.
Get another unfried ECU and get it in there.

+1 it will have had it.

Sorted
-
your ecu is fryed, some of the components on the output stage will have physicaly burned
-
99% of digi2 ecus are the same, just ones from models with cat that differ, and that is a rarity

Well ecu arived today, Thanks haskana!, and all is not well, flushed the oil through twice and fitted a new oil filter to clear the fuel out the sump, Started her up and she's knocking her t*ts off.
I'm suspecting a couple of conrods are snapped as there is total loss of compression and then its back again but its definatley fubar'd.
I'm collecting a new engine tomorrow which has 90k on it with SH to back up, Front end is stripped and ready forit to go in,
I always learn the hard way!! Pretty gutted that all this is from trying to cure 2nd gear runch and its ended up costing over 400 quid all in! not including the new re-con box.

You sure the engine is knackered? Might just be the hydraulic lifters not pressurised, they can take a while and they knock like hell when they're empty. Can't see why you would break the con rods, that takes some doing. If rods were broken it would sound like a cement mixer full of spanners and the compression wouldn't come & go. You would get reduced performance on some cylinders if the valves weren't lifting properly. It can take a while for the oil to get around the lifters...... :undecided:

Definaley bottom end mate, lifter filled and quietened down pretty quick, rev it to about 3k and it knocks hard, cant determine where its coming from as it sound like something is being thrown around, it cuts out then if you try to start there is no compression, leave it 5 mins and it will start again, on to 3 then 2 cylinders.
Im sure its dead.

I cannot see why leaving it 5mins would restore compression, if it is knocking hard at 3k then that sounds bottom end related.

Cambelt slipping badly and pistons hitting valves?........shouldn't happen on an 8v though :undecided:

i've no idea whats wrong with it, and i dont have the time or money to dig deeper into it, i'll strip it once its out and see. i tried to bump it when it was hydrolocked with fuel by pushing it with my mrs in the car, i reckon that killed it, although i was doing about 5mph and the engine didnt turn, it just slipped the clutch.
