A bit concerned, I had a new head fitted on my car with new valve stem seals new guides etc, Its is a ported and polished head.
It still smokes at startup I cant explain. I hope that someone can shed some light on this.
It only smokes at startup and then its gone or not obvious after that
Also I stopped using the car for about a week and now get strong fume like smell in the cabin.
Any help pointing out what is causing this would be appreciated!

Thanks for the welcome , sorry its a 1995 2L 8V GTI.
Not sure if its using alot of oil to be honest I have not checked in a while!
I am in South Africa so the Milage is about 260 000km approx about 130 000 miles not too sure

It has a metal head gasket! Coukld be seating but how do I make sure

A strong smell could be a blocked breather hose or the block on top the cam cover.
Reference the smoking, sounds like oil is leaking down into the bores which suggest a valve guide or seal problem or could be a ring issue.
Might be a good idea to carry out a compression test as your next move.

Thanks sounds like a good idea, what compression should the golf have on a 2L 8v GTI.

Probably more important that they are all the same about 100 is good.
-
As above really, or post the findings up on here.

What colour is the smoke? If it's white, the head gasket could be the problem, maybe they stupidly used the old one.
-
If its not using water or mixing water with oil or performace/compression issues then probably not gasket

Wayne, just checked and compression seems fine and no obvious oil use since the last service about 6 months ago.
Is it possible that a bloked breather pipe can be the cause of the smoke at startup??
Regards

Smoking on start up is oil in the combustion chamber caused by an internal leak. (seal gasket crack etc)
This leak may be very small and not a problem at the moment.
It might be the start of something serious, it will shag your cat though
My bet is valve stems if the compression is ok
