Title: Running like a dog
Post by: rossie4499 on 01 September 2004, 11:31
Hi,
My Mk4 Golf Gti t has just started running really badly and I wondered if anyone can help. It spuriously seems like it's running on 3 pots (loss of power and very lumpy/juddery) and there's sometimes a smell of burning plastic. It doesn't happen all of the time, but is becoming more frequent. A mate mentioned it could be the coil packs, but I would like to know what others think.
Thanks.

coil pack failure is common depending on the age of the car, what year is yours ?
Certainly could cause the symptoms you describe, but then again so could a number of other things, and being intermittent makes me think more towards the air mass meter (or MAF sensor).
Really hard to tell without looking at it with vag-com or other diagnostic software, pop along to your local vag specialist and ask them to read the fault codes.
Could also try cleaning the MAF with carb cleaner (its the part with the plug going into it between the airbox and the rubber TIP (turbo inlet pipe) )

Hope this helps.
Chris.
