To preserve the rules on the review thread, I thought I would post some observations from the Evo review here.
Firstly the Scirocco doesn't look good in white next to the Golf. Kind surprised by this as I kinda like the Scirocco, but white does it no favours and it looks dumpy.
Also very surprised with the interior comparison. Just goes to show how the MkVI has moved on from the MKV based Scirocco.
Driving wise, it does seem that the Golf is very refined, perhaps overly so. For me, this is fine, esp as I don't rag my cars about very often, save for the odd track day where I can push the car to its limit.
A fair review IMO, and reinforces the fact that the Golf will suit me. If I wanted and out and out sporty car, the Focus RS and Renaultsports would be the ones to go for... the Golf will do just fine for me thanks :)

Yes, an interesting test there. Basically they're saying the Scirocco is slightly more sporty, whereas the Golf is more 'mature'. That's good, because that's what I'm looking for in my next car. I agree the Scirocco does look a bit podgy, especially from the rear, while the interior design desperately needs upgrading to the new look & feel.

I had a 2.0TSI DSG Scirocco before my GTI and it feels quicker but it's not. The feeling of speed comes from the Sciroccos difficulty in getting the power down, it understeers and torque steers quite badly aking it feel 'frantic'. The GTI has narrower tyres, taller body etc but delivers the power to the wheels better and is therefore a much better car in my view.
The Scirroco does look cool and more people will stare at it but as a drivers car I have no regrets in changing. Ironically I switched as we have another kid on the way, wasn't expecting to get a better driving car just more practicality.

Good review.
Also confirmed my decision for me.
I am getting older and my GTi journey will continue.
The GTi has changed as have I.
If I was single, in my twenties, on the pull every Friday I would take the Scirocco.
Now I do the ironing while watching Top gear.
Still have a fire in my belly, just slightly quenched.

All this car vs car sh!t bores me to death.

The bottom line is that its up to YOU to decide whats better for you! Some guy on the net or in a mag is not going to be able to tell you that

Too true and I reckon I might be the only bloke who's owned both. For me the GTI is a better car, for others it's the Scirocco, wouldn't life be dull if we all liked the same things.

Move on then . . . .

Well surely its a case of what offers are available at the time and what we can afford...

Excellent EVO review/comparison and, having driven both, I totally agree - You have to really wind up the Mk6 GTI to get any fun out of it - It's too grown-up and not enough 'GTI'.

Move on to what ?

The two cars are basically built on the same platform but they offer quite different things. Personally, although I have absolutely no intention of buying either, I find the comparison very interesting.

What do you have to do to get fun out of the mk5 then as the mk6 is better in every aspect and faster ?

....Your definition of "better" is obviously different from mine. The Mk6 is an excellent car but the drive feel is far more detached. Read my review - It independently comes to many of the same conclusions as in this EVO article.

Strange as I have the EVO review of the car in May 09's edition and they comment
'Suddenly the predictability becomes reassurance, and the precision is exactly what you crave so that you can attack with confidence. You can throw the car into the corner really, really hard and still hit the apex. there's more grip than you might expect, so even when the car does slide you never feel like the slide is going to go on for hours, and it slides neutrally rather than extravagantly, which makes the fact you cant turn esp off less of an issue. The fun comes in carrying the speed and taking a road apart with the chassis, playing on a high-grip limit that feels tense but exploitable. From the first run I'm remembering why we rate the GTI so highly, the GTI is a fine car, more entertaining than the Scirocco'
Now, to me that sounds as far from detached as you can get, but I still try not to listen to EVO that much, they couldnt even get the basic spec of the GTI correct which is basic shool boy errors.

Yes, I agree, Kev - The Mk6 handling is very good indeed and the chassis is the same as the Mk5 (renowned), but you don't feel enough contact with what's going on. Perhaps I have been spoilt by my very modded Mk5.
