ha ha laugh at the muppet (me!) cheers BUT i have already seen that. the thing i cant understand is that, are some golfs specified with fixed services or is this just how often you actually get down to do it? i dont know if the previous owner was regular or not.
-
answered in the chatroom, see it does have a use ! :P

The service icon OIL has come up on the dash - I have put in the recommened oil into the engine but the icon still comes up when I start up.
Does anyboby know if it goes off after a while or do I have to reset it myself (if I do how, do I reset it??)
-
Got to reset it yourself mate,
Ignition off
turn the clock adjuster knob clockwise and hold it
Ignition on (still holding clock adjuster)
Press the trip meter reset button
Let go of clock adjuster
(if the service warning still shows press the trip reset again now)
And that should be it 8)
It's a bit tricky getting your hands in the right place the first time you do it, but you don't need to be double-jointed fortunately.
Chris.

cheers matey
do u know what happens if you put to much oil in the engine ??? because i have done just that
-
its likely to just get burned off, you get an excess in the piston walls and it goes out with your exhaust. If you put shed loads too much in then it can screw up the cat but other than that you should be okay.
-
i've heard tons of stories of knackered cats in 1.8T's due to overfilling oil, not sure if its just as bad with other engines. but 10 minutes to drain off a little oil, or replacement cat... i know which i'd rather do.? ;)
-
I did put a shed load in there and did about 100 miles on it. the car felt slugish.
i have drained it to just below the maximum mark - easy job just a 3/4"(19mm) socket on the sump did it. Car feels much better now that I have done that.
Do u think that i have damaged the CAT by doing 100 miles on it ???
topher - did exactly what u told me to do with regards to the oil reset procedure - no luck. what am i doing wrong
-
hmm, pass. :P
it took me a couple of tries to get it, holding the reset button in a little longer and pressing it just as i released the clock adjuster. is it showing up as "service oil" in the milometer/trip meter display or as a warning light ?
-
Yeah Serivce Oil flashes as i start her up and lasts about 2-3 mins
-
Car failed its MOT today - guess on what.......emissions >:(
What do you reckon? My fault in putting to much oil in the engine?? and now the CAT is knackered. Going back next week to see if i can manage to burn some of the sh*t out.
Will let you know the outcome.
Any more advice about the flashing SERVICE OIL problem?
-
there's a good chance the overfilled oil has gunged the cat up, not sure if you can clean the lambda sensor up, hope you havent knackered the cat :-\ if noone on here can suggest anything else its probably best to ring a vag specialist and ask their opinion.
as for the oil service warning, i asked the same question as you a month or two back and gave me the same instructions i gave you, worked for me so that one's got me stumped too ???
-
Thanks for your help mate - i am taking the car to a specialist on Friday hopefully they will tell me what is wrong.
How much am I looking at for a new CAT ???
-
About 300 notes all in for your car mate at a guess.? :-\
edited:
just looked on eurocarparts and they're asking ?432.25 + vat for the d/pipe and cat :(
if you do need a replacement, get on the phone to milltek the d/pipe cat combo for my turbo was ?385 +vat, so you get a far superior part, for much less !
-
ok not too bad - i was expecting more. i travel about 110 miles a day so hopefully when i take it on friday most of the oil will have been burnt off. Fingers crossed for me ;D
-
i think you typed that before my edit :-\
-
Guys,
Bad news i am affraid - to much oil in the engine knackered my CAT, so had to replace it.
Good thing is, only cost ?170 inc VAT for d/pipe and CAT.
So let this be a lesson to us all DON NOT OVERFIL YOUR ENGINE WITH OIL.

Where did you get your cat from D Owen????
-
Ummmm..... Let me think.....
I got my CAT from CES (Chester Exhaust Supplies). I paid approx £170 inc VAT for the CAT itself and for a manifold gasket.
I believe they have Branches across the UK - see their website http://www.cesuk.com
Why do you need a new one - hope you havent done the same as me :embarassed:

cheers mate, i'll take a look at there site, well i had a blocked breather pipe and some dodgy garage undone a few screws on top of my rocker (god knows why??????) so of course oil was constantly evaporating and i couldnt find the problem at the time, think that had alot to do with it, and not sure if it did get over filled or not, but it stinks of cabbages out the back really badly and a bit of black soot
