Title: Cost of welding..
Post by: Llewellyn on 27 July 2009, 00:33
As i mentioned a while back the Monza has a big hole on the inner skin around the filler neck.  I mean big.

Anyway, i was just wondering on a rough guide to having it welded and the difficulty level.  Ive got too much stuff on at the moment and a welder that needs sorting to do it myself.  It doesnt need to be pretty, just MOTable.

thoughts would be appreciated

I'd imagine the position of that's going to make it almost exquisitely car-breakingly expensive to get sorted, unless you're going it yourself.

The hole is by the filler neck, which means the tank will need dropping to facilitate access and remove the risk of blowing it all up.

If I was pricing it I'go in close to a grand by the time it's painted in and re-assembled etc.  AND that would depend on the tank dropping and going back OK - there's a huge opportunity for things to get worse before you can even do the welding.

How do you actually go about fixing the above - can you just chop the filler neck out of a good car and weld it in place? Or is it all double skinned?

^^^ that was my thought, its not paint work, so that saves a fair bit of hassle.  Just really dont want to break it, cos i love small bumper Monzas and its a early car.  but i think i might have too

Mark just had to have a bit done on his. If you can find someone who's willing to weld and do it at yours it'll be cheaper. Strip the car down and prep it, get them to weld and then you can re-assmeble.

This is a problem on the older Golfs. A chap at work has the same problem and he has bought a new panel complete with the petrol filler hole. He has to chop out the old rusty panel then graft the new one in place. probably alot of work, but do-able. look at the rest of the car first though. If that is the only rust then the car may be worth doing. if the sills are gone then think about alternatives. :lipsrsealed:

If i was going to do it as a job i would charge around £450 painted depending on how bad the rust is behind the filler as that may need repairing as well.
If you wanted just the panel welded and filled then probably £200 but your best off getting it done all at once

The car needs no paint at all,  its only the inner skin that is rotten.

the car will need paint after welding on bodywork
regrdless on if you touch the actual paint the body work is gonna get to hot and at the least make the paint bubble up

get a pic of the rust up. im thinking if the hole is big it might be worth cutting the metal out of a scrapped car because its gonna be tricky getting the shape right out of sheet steel. you probably have a rusted bracket for the fuel filler neck so that will need remaking as well
