Make sure you upgrade to RCD510

Nothing wrong with that to me. Looks good.

Looks good to me too.  Any more would be flashy.

How does it sound?  Isn't that the main thing?

I dont really know why you get a 310 on the GTI and a 510 standard on the rocco. Get yourelf an RCD 510 from ebay and sell your one on their. Probably be an outlay of £300 if you want a touch screen colour display? Depends if you think its worth it?!

Will be orderin a 510,but it as me concerned which to buy, coz when you adjust the climate control the stereo displays stuff, wud this feature work with any 510???

The blue screen annoys me when the dials are white, seems like an after thought by VW.

Sounds from my Mk 5 310 where better but this unit does give you more info using your ipod, where the old style wud show Track 1.

Got to admit that the 510 does look nicer than the 310.  Yes I know it doesnt do much more but I am glad I went for this upgrade

I'm really surprised the GTI doesn't get the 510 as standard in the UK, it does here in France and VW France aren't normally that generous on standard equipment. I would definitely have upgraded, as the blue colour of the 'old' 310 doesn't match the white illumination on the new VWs. You can pick up 510s on the German eBay quite easily.

Poo is a little harsh, but yes I prefer the looks of the 510

What I find scandalous is the cost of sat nav!   I'm sticking to my trusty tomtom.

I'm sticking to my trusty Road Atlas of Great Britain, augmented by a printout of my destinaton from streetmap.co.uk.  Seems to encourage me to keep my eyes on the road a lot better....

Just had my 310 upgraded to the 510 (goodwill gesture from vw and the garage) and all the climate features work on it and to my ear sounds better even though the speakers are the same (no scientific basis for this)

Had 310 in mine but it just looked wrong so I bought a 510 out of a MK6 GTI off ebay, it has the reversing camera input if i want to install that later.

Looks much better, sounds the same.

dashboard illumination is horrible in new vws. it's far too bright and garish.

i felt ill after driving a 09 passat estate around for a night. and also annoyed by the lack of steering wheel radio controls.

Do you think?  I think the new white dashboard illumination adds a touch of class... more in keeping with the facelifted Audi S3's and the like.

Each to their own I spose.   :undecided:

Sat in a MkIV golf yesterday, didn't like all the blue interior lighting at all. Just too much of it!

Red needles on blue dials wasn't a good look imo

Much prefer the white dials

Can't you just turn the intensity down with that rheostat thingy? I think white looks a lot better than hard-to-read blue.

the blue hurts your eyes after a while. Thats why im so glad the R's lights are white with electric blue needles.. even more glad the gti has switched to white too. Much softer on the eyes on long night journeys.

I was going to specify the 510 on mine as the test drive car had it. However, in the end, after the salesman had showed me through the features of a 310 I thought I couldn't justify the extra money as the 310 does exactly the same, just in mono rather than pretty colours.
More importantly I can't imaging it being worth a penny extra come selling time.

Agree with you on that one.  I don't believe the RCD310 is any less of a unit when it comes to playing the music, it's just better looking.  This was also confirmed by the VW Salesman but then again, what do they know?

Does it also tell you the track details on the multi function computer? I've just noticed this from the picture posted.

looking at the 310 again on full screen (was using a blackberry b4), it doesn't look too bad.  the blue is actually a lighter blue which looks good

however in the daytime the 310 does look a bit dowdy

Remember the 510 is also a 6 disc cd changer and can read from a memory card so not sure where the salesman was coming from in that one.

Hardly ever used the 6-disc CD changer I had with my Peugeot (I didn't order it, it just came like that).  At the time I was quite pleased to have got an extra I hadn't ordered, but having to load it up in advance before setting off took all the fun out of it, and I kept putting the discs in back to front as well.

Now, I've got whatever music I want on my iPod, I just want to be able to plug that in and I'm happy.

I agree with you its probably an extra I'll hardly use, although my kids can now have all their music on 6xCD's in MP3 format, I'll have mine on the i touch and my wife can use her memory card. No more faffing about!!

I just thought it strange the salesman didn't relay these differences over the 310 to let the customer decide.

Steven.

He did tell me about the autochanger and the memory card functions. I knew about them anyway from the price list and brochure. However, as is stated above I have an ipod. This made the 6CD in my previous car totally redundant when I got it and would do the same in the GTi. The salesman gave me a free ipod cable andI was away - job's a good 'un. Just stick the ipod in the under arm rest storage hole and leave it to play. I've got track details on the 310 and artist track and album on the dashboard display if I want it. Perfect. All of this applies to the memory card feature too.
What I'd have paid for a 510 I could buy a really nice Tom Tom which has a Bluetooth phone system (£200 or so) and I've saved £200 or so on the price of the 510, £300 or so on the price of hands free phone installment and £gazillions on the price of installed sat nav. Bit of a no brainer in my opinion.

He gave you a free cable? I was under the impression this should be included!!! Do I need to order one?

Cable is not included, you need to ask for it - you'll get it free but make sure you specify and they'll have it ready for you when you pick up your car.

You get the USB one in the car. The ipod one is £15 or so according to the price brochure. Suffice to say there was no chance of me paying that having paid that much for the car!!!

I agree that the RCD310 does not look as good as the RNS310 though... it looks great in my car... and it compliments everything else on the dashboard especially at night. And I dont think paying a few hundred quids justifies the upgrade to RCD510.

how much is the RNS 310?  RNS 510 seems to be the only option on UK cars and that is an extra 1,500 quid!  I'm happy to pay an extra 300 quid to get a better looking stereo with big screen for parking camera/ sensors i.e. the RCD 510

Hello,
Found this site whilst trying to decide on options! Does the 510 offer any benefits for browsing folders on the ipod? I have the BMW ipod integration at the moment and on the standard 2 line lcd stereo I have its difficult to browse through a long list of albums or artists where as on the iDrive satnav its much better.

Also for the parking sensors does it offer any real improvement?

No idea about your first question, but its the reverse park camera that you'd need the screen for rather than the sensors.

I stuck with the 310, would never use the cd changer, and the rear window is big enough for me to look out of while reversing ;)

I do agree it looks better, but had to draw the line on the options at some point.

The price list for parking sensors says 'Ultrasonic, audible with optical parking display via the vehicles audio system' I took that to mean it displays the distance to the object on the stereo and wondered if it was different on the 510 vs 310
