Hi all,
Been to look at a very nice MK2 today well nice but was just over my price range! and the seller was not going to drop £250 it was up for £2250. Now this is the big question for £2000 what is it to be a MK2 or MK3. Seems like you can get much more for your cash going for a MK3 (i dont no) but they have not got the same stigma about them as the MK2. I like the look of both cars. Whats the cost of parts like for the MK3 and also working on the MK3 your self as apposed to the MK2.
Please help a GTI less guy who wants one now!!!

You should ask in the general vw postings obviously guys in here will say mk3 and in the mk2 section likewise.
-
I will say honestly....the mk2 is a better & faster fun car while the mk3 is heavy and slow!! but is better for everyday use (unless you find a well specced late mk2!).. repair wise the mk2 is very similar to the mk3 but some parts are getting rare!!
so if you want something fun and fast get a mk2 but if you want something a bit softer with all the mod cons then the mk3 is the one (you'll have the stigma of owning the unloved mk3 tho!!)
for £2000 you'll find a very very good 16v mk3 or a vr6 (even highlines are within your budget)
-
For you budget I would pick a mk3, you would need to be very lucky to find a nice mk2 without spending more.
-
I suppose! But i like the look of both and i have £2000 burning a hole in my pocket!
I have been in the MK2 zone on this site for about two week now. But do like the MK3 i no all you guys are MK3s but give me some advise on what to look for in a MK3. I need your help guys pull me to the MK3!

Hi,
Thank you that thread was very detailed. I have no problem with the MK3 at all. Just need to find a good one thats not been hammered by someone. And all the mod-cons do seem very appealing!
Thanks everybody i'm now looking for a nice MK3!! how cool is that.

As someone who has a mk3 gti 8v and a mk2 16v i think i can answer this quite well and honestly
basically if you want a car to be refined, economical and pretty robust then its the mk3,but driving it is uneventfull and not overly exciting.
But if you want a car thats got character,is fast fun and will defiantly make ya heart race and put a massive smile on your face then its the mk2,it will probably break more often but thats half the fun and fixing them is relativly easy and you form a relationship with the car.
What im saying is the mk3 is a car and will always just be a car but the mk2 will become more than just a car,if you read some of the posts on the mk2 section you will realise this, dont get me wrong i love my mk3 its a fantastic car but it dosnt give me the buzz my mk2 does, just something to consider
-
Nice one wish i had the both! No i really dont know what to do. Not to much of a mechanic really, but i can understand what you are saying. The MK2 for me looks old school pure and new for its age. The MK3 looks like all the other cars of today but thats not putting them down. I just want something in good condition for everyday use but with the classic name and history.

corrado?

Mmmm nice but not a Golf. Tell you i have a hole burning in my pocket and all i want is a Golf GTI!!
-
Best get yaself on pistonheads then,I'm sure ull find something there with the budget u have, you maybe even be able to get a colour concept for £2000 they are really nice!
-
my mk 16v has just hit 100000 miles it's a 1995, so low for year been well looked after and I paid £300!
Just look about you will find one.

MK3 (Pariah)= reliable, cheap to run 40+mpg, cheap insurance, not too exciting, comfy and warm in winter
MK2 = lot of bits break, quite thirsty, parts rare, handles like go kart,
highly adictive ,gets written off if you fart in it.
I would say Mk3 if you dont have a garage or money to fix MK2 or if your GF does not like you spending all weekend with bits in the frontroom.
I would not get another MK2 purley cos i do not have the funds to buy a good one/fix one up.
If you use it as a dialy you will spend money most months/wkends
2xPB B reg's GTI's
1x J reg digi GTI
2x KR valver
1x MK3 Tug boat GTI

Nice one man! It will be used as a daily run around and funds are very limited. So its going to be the MK3 just need to find a good one thats not been thrashed and has some history with it.
Photos of my new MK3 will be on this site soon!

Ok, I like mk3s. i think they probs win on daily reliability, definately for comfort and space.
But i have had my fair share of mk2s.
Both me and my sister ran golfs at same time, she was 17 so had a 96 1.9cl. It was horrible and slow and handled like a oil tanker.
I had a 1991 mk2 Driver. Now yes i had a few breakdowns, mainly electrical, but however come mots for next few years i'd sail through.
The mk3, every year mot hammer would find another hole.
mk2s just dont ever seem to rust as bad if at all.

Around windscreen, Wiper boss's front and rear, boot lock, fuel filler neck, Boot lid, doors, rear panel seams, front panel seams, lower front wings. Floor does not seem the cumble like Mk3 as not so many grommets
As with any car if you dont look after the paint/underseal it will rust
My mk3 is a crumbly old shed (now)
I know of an L reg one without a spot on it and 190k on the clock
Dont buy a car without getting under it/pulling trim up/poking it etc.
-
Given your funds, you could get some of the better of both. if somebody was to give me the job of spending money i'd go for best mk3 you can find, then steam clean, and waxoil every thing. also if you do remove inner trim and do doors etc, you'll have a car that will probably last forever. look after it and it'll look after you
-
Nice one. I want one like now but going to slow down a bit. Keep looking for the best one i can buy for the cash i have. So a steam clean and fresh coat of wax to the under side. How often should you get them serviced, how much for a cambelt change.
Been looking at a MK3 on pistonheads on sale via Sheffield car warehouse dark blue £2195 looks well. Anyone think its worth a look with what you can see and read!
