just got my mk4 1.8t.
just wondering how many people are still on it? and your millage?
i want to get mine done as soon as i can but its hard to spend the money when the cambelt was only done 10k ago
-
I waited until my water pump went  Managed to get about 31k out of the original one, and that took 10 years.
-
I think mine has the original at 74k miles.
-
lol! was that the total millage of the car? or what you had done init?
my millage is on 103000.
im thinking of just doing the same. can it cause any damage if you turn it of instantly?

Car had 31k on it when my water pump went, leaving me stranded at the bottom of an underground multi storey car park! Got it replaced along with the cambelt etc for about 330 notes. Cars on 32,600 now with no problems.
-
mine went like 2 months ago, and it was 76k on clock
-
well, looking through all the paperwork it had one done at 66k by vw, how long should i expect this one to last? 37000 miles ago
will it be a uprated one as well?
-
nope i am on the metal fin one
-
replaced mine just before 100K - only replaced it as i was replacing the cambelt so thought better safe than sorry
-
done mine today as a precautionary measure before going on holiday 112,000 miles looks like original one plastic pullley still in one piece no cracks or damage visible and 04/2001 dated on the pulley
-
Mine went at 130K as im sure eveyone knows
-

Agreed, as far as I'm concerned it's a serviceable part. Awesome class it as one!
-
yeah its just a shame the last owner didnt get it done when he got the cambelt done :-(. mine had it done at 66k so its due one in about 4000 miles. oh well i guess its worth it for the peace of mind

Just a note that a metal one is no longer made by VW,they went back to a plastic imprellor :undecided:
-
I read somewhere that they changed the plastic so that it doesn't go brittle like the old ones :undecided:

yep - i had a new plastic impellored pump fitted - service bloke said they had revised it
original lasted 100K so i'd hope the new one will too
-
They went to metal, but have gone back to plastic(god knows why),got a metal one for sale if anybody wants one?
-
because plastic is cheaper and they revised the old design so that it doesn't fail
-
how long ago was it that they were using metal ones?
even on the metal ones is it adviced to get it changed every 40000 miles?
-
For the sake of 50 quid I'd get it changed every time you do the cam belt
-
Think they're only like £27
-
plus fitting :lipsrsealed: my vw charges extra
