Hi, changed twin plug clocks on an '89 digi a couple of days ago to solve a rev counter/buzzer issue.......that' fixed......but.....
now the fuel gauge does not work and we have no dash or switch lighting at all ? :undecided:
Any ideas as to what we've screwed up?

check fuse #20, and see if your numberplate lights still work!
fuel gauge is probably unrelated, perhaps its broken in the replacement clocks :(

Ah.....fuse 20? I looked in the fusebox guide but does not mention dash lights on fuse 20......will check pronto. Thanks again.
I've dismanteld the old clocks (just out of interest) and it looks like the old fuel gauge will swap in easily enough, I bet the problem is on the printed circuit rather than the gauge though.........pic attached for no particular reason.........

yeah wont be hard if you can strip em down like that, also worth checking the nuts that hold the gauge to the pcb are there as this is where the electrical connection is made

Checked fuse 20, its OK and the number plate light is working. We took the old Blaupunkt radio out as well and theres a wire free in the hole now which is getting a variable voltage when adjusting the rheostat on the h'light switch so I guess the switch is OK........is there an earth behind the dash that we might have dislodged I wonder?

i had same prob found out one of the wires in the back of the headlight switch had slightly come out causing me to have no dash lights did my head in trying to find out wot was causing it

the fact that wire is getting 12v suggests all your bulbs have blown! this wire is connected to the same feed as all the other bulbs. check at each switch for variable voltage, the wire will be blue/grey :)

Swapped the clocks again for some 16v ones last night and its all OK now. 'all dash lights out' was mis-communication, was all 'clock lights' out........yes RJ all three bulbs were blown, that'll teach us to check first...........doh! :embarassed: Two out of the three were blown in the new ones too, thought the fuel gauge was knackered in the new one as well at first and pulled all the fuse box out etc looking for dodgy wiring..........turns out the git had let it run so low there was no so**ing fuel in it, popped my gallon of mower fuel in it.....and hey... we're in the red :embarassed:. Thank f*** for that! Moral of the story, if you're changing clocks, check all the bulbs first & make sure there's some fuel in it.
BTW, I put a 9v battery directly across fuel gauge terminals of the dodgy clocks, turns out it was OK but feeding it from the plug socket it would not work, I notice there is a 'nick' in the blue printed circuit which is probably the fault.

Oh bo**ocks!! :cry: It seems like the 16v clocks we put in have a problem as well. Occasionally there's a horrible whirring screech from the speedo (not the buzzer) when you fiddle with the cable connection it goes (fiddling is poss cos the radio is still out). Found out the prob with the previous 8v clocks with duff fuel gauge was that it had been taken apart and one of the terminal nuts on the gauge replaced but with an insulating washer beneath rather than a springy earthing washer so no contact with the printed circuit, changed it and now I can get it to work off the plug connection OK. :angry: Bloody clocks out again I suppose.......I reckon they'll be able to replace themselves soon.........arse! :laugh:

a spray of silicone lube up the chuff of the speedo might help, if not you could always swap the old one across.
