About to put on a new exhaust and the heat shield is ripped so should probably come off.
Do i actually need them? Also does anyone know how much they cost?
It seems like they are a simple sheet of metal but i have a feeling vw will do me in the bum for a replacement.

It is better to run them or make your own from some thin tin.

The ones nearer the front are more critical especially the one on the bulkhead under the bonnet. You should have them all fitted if unless you want your underseal to start cracking from the heat and let the dreaded tinworm in. Yes VW will absolutely rape you for them, last time I looked the big square one under the rear seat area was about £120!!!

I asked about this ages ago as I dont have one fitted. Was told it doesnt really matter.
Havent had one for as long as I can remember and dont have any probs with rust either.
If you do want one try getting one from a scrappy, VW price is ridiculous!!

rear seat one not fitted to 1.3, under car one not fitted to 1.3.. bulkhead one waasnt relevant as was crossflow..
bulkhead one not fitted to my gti either now.. heatwrapped manifold.. no need for the tin
