For any reason at all, what's been your fav GTI over the past 30+ years ?
-
Obvious answer from a MkV owner, although I have always loved the MkII since I was about 10 when they started doing the run out models.
One day my MkII dream will come true.
-
I like the mk1, what a car in its day, few faults but no-one seemed to care
I'm gonna plump for the mk6 as my fav for the reason its the first one i will own.
-
Same reasoning as me I guess.
MkI was ground breaking, the MkII was just the first car that really got me obsessed as a kid. Although I did like my dad's 1987 D reg white ford capri 1.6 laser :smug:
-
Dunno. I test drove a Mk III in 1997 and wasn't especially impressed. I didn't buy one. I test drove a Mk VI less than three weeks ago, and I am buying one. I have had no contact with any of the others.
But I like new cars....

GTi MKII, dark grey BIG BUMPER edition, stripped out and converted to run on VR6 power!

-
I know its early days but I thought the mk1 would win this.
-
MK2 got my vote although id never be able to own one due to the milage I do, I need a bit of comfort. MK5 / 6 comes in at a close second.
-
Mk1 campaign in diamond sliver
-
I know it not many votes so far but no surprise there aint any mk3 or 4 votes
-
Voted mk1, I'm old enough to remember how far ahead they were of the competition back then, plus they had the purest styling.
My head would have voted mk2 as they were the best engineered car by a long way. I seriously don't think there was a better built car in the price bracket for another 20 years!!! If they didn't get accident damaged or abused they just didn't rust. The interior was spartan but solid as hell and the big bumper cars just looked the cojones.
Aside from the mk6 which I'm thinking over, I've owned at least one example of each exluding the mk3 (where I had two VR6s but not GTIs as they just didn't cut the mustard) so can at least have a valid owners opinion. IMO

Well this thread is in the mk6 section which is probably the least viewed, and realistically unless the thread was titled ''owners of mk6s, which is your favourite GTI?'' this should be in the General Chat section. If it was in there then all and sundry would be diving in with their Golf Plus magazine fuelled opinions which probably just relate to modified cars as that's all they know.
Again, in my very humble opinion!

lol lets not forget this topic has been done 1457 times. All hell would break loose if this was posted in general chat.

I put it here because most of the people around these parts are new to the forum, so although the topic may have been done ten million times, its the first time for most of us. Also, people can change their minds, through time someone might think, you know what, I actually think the mk5 is the best whereas last time I thought mk2 etc. And finally, there's not a 'clique' in this forum section or wannabe mods, so its far easier to talk about what we want.

Have a MKII(http://www.volkswizard.co.uk/images/cars/j482nea/Front%202.jpg), waiting on a MKVI............................

vvvvvvvvvv

Ooooooh, SHINY!

Mark VI for me cos it's the only one I have ever almost owned. I say this cos I will be picking mine up next week  I considered purchasing a mark V edition 30 but when I started seeing ads for the mark VI gti my mind was made up.
Don't you think the mark II in the pic looks very dated.
-
Dated, classic.... all depends on your perspective I suppose.
It's VERY shiny, though!

back when i was young i recall my uncle had a Mk2 in red. very nice car indeed. the one in the pic looks great too.
however, i've never wanted to buy a golf until the MkV but when i saw the MkVI, I was swayed instantly!
-
I looked at the Mk III when I bought the Peugeot, but the Golf lost. However, knowing that Peugeot have given up on that sort of car now (sorry, the 207 is a Dinky toy), and that the Golf was still alive and kicking, it was always going to be looked at.
And I was lucky enough to start looking just after the Mk VI was launched. How could I vote for anything else, even though I haven't got it yet?
I'm sure the Mk II is great if you're an enthusiast, but it's not on the list for someone in 2009 who just wants a car.

I agree with all you said above except the last bit. SOem of us don't have the money for a brand new car or frankly a 3 year old one. Quite a lot, if notmost, of the MKII owners on here use them as their daily driver. My last 3 MKII's were all my main car although my current one clearly isn't. My main car is a Corrado but that was still only £1K which is MKII money.
If I could afford one I'd have a MKV Edition 30 or new Rocco as my daily.

I see your point. I suppose I was thinking more about the carefully preserved and treasured Mk IIs the enthusiasts have. Still, if we're voting on the "best", I guess it still has to be the Mk VI, because I don't imagine many people who have the money would go for a Mk II rather than a Mk VI as their main family car these days.

Mk1 is my fav, its why i have 2. I used one of them for my daily driver/commuter from 91-05.
I bought the mk2 earlier this year as i was offered it and just wanted another car/needed a daily at the time i could have easily went and got another mk5 GTI i had the cash (wifes stolen keys to the other one ) but i got the mk2 because of the way it feels to drive, I don't buy on worth or value i buy on feel.
-
What sort of mileage have you put on the one you've had for all that time? Do you think it's a practical proposition to keep it going much longer as a daily workhorse car?
Rolfe.
-
I put 120,000 miles on the car in that time and it has never missed a beat or let me down or needed any engine work at all. Even when i use to treat her bad when i was a silly teenager. Granted ware and tear items like wheel barrings, tyres, exhaust and such like (things that with time on any car need changing) but that car starts first time everytime. I can leave it for a year untouched and it will start first time and run like a dream. Unlike newer VW or electronic controled cars of newer vintage we have owned as a family inbetween. That car is why im a GTI fan plain and simple. It got retired from daily duty for two reason only. I decided that as she had served me so well she should be cherrished as shes like a family member now. The other reasons is the otherhalf talked me into getting the mk5 and now maybe a mk6 to replace the current mk2 (She likes to keep up with the Jones  )

Mark 2 16v
I have owned 2, both were very quick and reliable.
I can remember being 4 up with my mates and being hassled by a Ford Escort Turbo in Milton Keynes. ( 1990 ish ) Even 4 up he could not keep up around the roundabouts, only making some progress on the straights.
Very impressive cars, would love to have another one as long as it was original.

Definately the Mk2, looking to get another one soon, had 4 so far, getting rid of a 2003 scoobie to get one, after that i think it would be the mk4, on my second one of them now, and its a very nice car to drive day to day, or take for a spirited blast.
