Hi all, I fitted some newish front fogs over the weekend but found that neither the front or rear fogs work. Anyway, I got on to it this afternoon, checked fuses, relays, fusebox connectors etc (managed to fix the remote central locking in the process ), checked voltage at lights......nowt. Thinks.....I'll remove the switch and check the voltage at the block behind the switch........Hmm....... 12v on two contacts only when the lights are on........seems right to me? Anyway I just thought I'd dismantle the switch as its been modded with a blue LED and this is the total contents of the switch.....now I'm thinking there is something missing from in there as there's nothing that would seem to bridge the contacts when you press the switch. It has two 'click 'positions when I reassemble it but does not 'switch'.........mind you the blue led lights up ok when you put the lights on?????
Am I missing something or do I need a new switch? Thanks J

Sounds like a switch problem to me,taking apart switches is always a gamble whether they will work when u put em back together,if you have a mate with a mk2 I'd borrow his switch to test it then ull def know failing that get a switch from a scrappy won't be xspensive or buy one off eBay,if you've checked all fuses and established there current there I can't see what else it could be,maybe try cleaning the contacts on the back of the switch aswell.
-
Where was the 12V at the connector with the lights on? If it was the top two then that is the switch illumination - hence why your blue led works.
The switch looks fine, when you throw the switch the small black bit moves up, and bridges the two terminals together. Cant see it in your picture, but there should be a metal bit on the middle black bit.
-
you are right, there is a bit missing from the switch, there should be a metal plte on top of that spring which actually transfers the current from the input pin to the fog lights when you press it. looks liek whoever put the led in there fked up ;)
-
Looking at the plug block, the power came to the top right and bottom left wires.......?
Def. no metal plate RJ, just the spring and a plastic block with holes in it.......... :undecided:
To the scrappy again this weekend then I suppose?
-
yep im afraid so! at a push a corrado or mid 90s passat switch will work, just make sure its the same shape. iirc the later ones changed size? Try transporters and MK3 polos as well :)
all of the above have a different switch front on, but the plug on the back is the same and you may even be able to swap internals over.
-
OK, thanks, that gives me a bit more scope in the scrappy.
-
worst case for beer tokens i think i might have some random spares!
-
Right......I've fitted a switch from the scrappy, on the first click I get nothing (I presume should be front fogs) and on the second click I get the orange light on the switch and the rear RHS fog comes on. Is the rear LHS supposed to have a fog as well? There's a good bulb in the holder which I have checked out but can't get it to light up? Jezza :undecided: :undecided: :undecided:
-
yes this is normal, 1st click is front fogs only and there is only 1 rear fog light fitted as std :)
if the blanking hole was bashed thru in your passenger light cluster and a bulb fitted, you need to run a wire from the driver side cluster to power the light
-
OK, so its legal with just the one fog on a '91H? Thats the main thing as the mot is due shortly.
I'll have a play with the front fogs and let you know how I get on, they're not so important at the moment. Had this prob on my 16v back in 2006, tripped over my own post in a search, can only be a wiring/connection problem I'm sure.
-
yeah perfectly legal. as for fronts check you have a fog relay fitted, without one they wont do owt :)
-
I'm presuming relay #10 (type23) is the one, there's a type23 in #11 as well, tried swapping over but no change.
I love Mk2's, there's always something to be fixed
-
yeah type '53' in slot 10 is the fog relay :)
worth checking the bulbs havent blown too, and check the fog loom is plugged in under the header tank (yellow/white and brown wires to a 2 pin plug)
-
Yay! Front fogs work, slight corrosion film on bulb earth plate on o/s, corrosion on connector n/s...sorted!
Checked rear fogs, no supply wire to the connector on the left, but no sign of plastic broken out, I note these clusters are the smoked ones off a 16v, perhaps the 16v have twin fogs........? I can see its easy enough to get a live to the LHS, but prob won't bother if its as it should be.
-
no MK2 ever got twin rear fogs from the factory, just got one on the left side for LHD cars, or one on the right for a RHD car ;)
