Title: Just seen the new GTI on the road for the first time!!
Post by: matchboy on 22 July 2009, 14:14
and i can confirm it looked the doggy's do-dah's - amazing in the flesh!  the deep pearl black looked fantastic.  although he did have the 17's on it which never ceases to amaze me why people don't upgrade to the 18's.  still, it looked great and made me even more excited about mine (if that was possible!)

18's look better. 17's better for old folk or those with young kids...

i couldn't help myself with that little dig he he!  there was an old man in the passenger seat but didn't see the driver!  either way, get the 18's and give the car the wheels it deserves!!  I have a 10 month old daughter and I had 18's on my mk 5 and am getting 18's on my mk 6 - in fact, when i put her in her car seat she stares at the alloys glistening in the sun - she is her father's daughter lol!

You're going to have to look awful hard to tell the 18s from the 17s when the car is moving.

Of course, if gazing admiringly at it while it's sitting in your driveway is the height of your ambition, I guess £415 is a small price to pay....

what did it sound like outside then? does it still have the noise of the MK5 or is the engine as quiet as rumoured when on a drive past?

Ok, maybe 4 years then, was it not rel 2005 ?

Of course its a facelift, I've had to learn myself to say this, cause if I don't I'm having to fight off about 15 mk5 owners all at once.

unfortunately it was only doing about 15-20 mph as it was in town and its on a busy street so couldn't hear anything like that.  i will say though (and obviously we are all biased on here) it totally stood out from the crowd, most people on the street you could see were having a cheeky glance and muttering 'flash (unt' under their breath lol

Niiiiiiiiiiiice! I've only seen one - a white MK VI GTi heading northbound on the A80 last Sunday.

It did stand out, though. Personal preference would still be a darker colour, though  :nerd:

Good point tyrerc. The one I test drove was very quiet in comparison to the mkv exhaust which is hardly amazing anyway.

Still, think that's what be have tried to do, make it more refined and more main stream.

How did you guess?

I just quoted you the list price, because I didn't spec them.  I didn't try to beat anyone down.  I agree the shadow trim looks nice, I'd have had it if it had been £50 or so, but I'm really not that fussed.

And as a smooth ride is paramount in this car, then I was quite happy to save the money.

quite honestly i think the 18s will help with resale value.  when looking for for my cars, i always think that the wheels make the biggest difference.  e.g. BMWs on small alloys look awful, only the bigger wheels sell well.  not excessive mind... over-wheeled cars can look tacky.

I value the comfort of my ar$e over the look of 18" or 19", but as has already been said, 17" are soooooooo MKV.

Edit: There's a pic of a MKVI in another thread on 17" & the wheels look tiiinnny on the MKVI. 18" minimum!  :nerd:

Not. A. Chance.

I'm actually deeply curious as to the reason for the price ticket on these things.  After all, by taking the 18s, you're not having the 17s.  Are the 18s really worth over £400 more than the 17s?  What the bleep is actually going on here?

It's not the size of the 18s I find attractive.  I appreciate that you geeks like the slightly bigger wheels but to me, I can't even see the difference.  And if the extra inch radius makes the ride a little less smooth, then no way.

What I like is the shadow trim.  If the shadow trim was available in 17s, for a reasonable upgrade price (it's only paint, dammit!), I'd probably have it.  But paying £400 extra for a slightly cooler look (only noticeable when the car is stationary) with the downside of slightly degrading ride comfort, no thanks.

Rolfe.

I don't think it's a bad deal at all for £400 more. But I can totally see where you're coming from in keeping the 17's and the ride and handling are likely to be marginally worse on the 18's.

As for justifying the premium, obviously got the extra materials used in creating the bigger rim, the cost of the bigger tyres and then the finish to the the alloys which isn't just a bit of paint on the inner sections, remember that the face of the alloys is diamond cut which I am guessing is more costly than simply spraying the alloy silver as per the 17's.

an extra inch makes all the difference rolfe!!!

i suppose its down to personal preference, say, like leather.  i personally would have paid an extra grand to get the 18's but they are first on my list of extras!

It's down to what you're prepared to pay, and I think the evidence from this forum suggests that VW can get the premium they're asking.  Just not from me!

Yes, I can see the slightly bigger rim costs a little more, and the tyres (they're smaller in profile but they're wider, is that right?) slightly more also.  But £400+?  I only read that the shadow trims were painted on.  They don't look that different to me, for the price.  I suppose if all the geeks who will pay the price don't need  the marketing spiel to understand the subtle but oh-so-expensive differences, then fine.  But from what I read, and what I saw of the visible difference, I expected the 18s to be maybe about £50 more, until I saw the price ticket.

So I have 17's on my current mk 5 and I've always thought they looked well (this is my ad)..

My mk 6 arrives on monday and I've only gone for the 18s as the 17s didnt look as well IMO....something about the car looking bigger than than the mk 5...they just looked a little lost on it...

I think sometimes when people are looking at the bigger picture they lose sight of the real value of money, hence VW know they'll easily get away with £400 extra for the shadows.

If you actually get the two wheels along side each other though, as with the monza and monza 2 alloys from the mkv, the differnece is really apparent. Whilst the overall shape is the same, the finish is completely different.

Either way I'm sure you'll be happy with yours.

Very good point - get the 18s, add ACC as insurance for the ride being too harsh - £1100 on top of an already high RRP and you've stealth bought Audi!

Have ordered a GTD (yes, I know!).  Ride with the 18s on test drive (no ACC) was great (think GTD is slightly softer than GTi anyway though).  Problem on the GTD side though is that neither set of Alloys as good as GTi/Scirocco choices...

Title: Re: Just seen the new GTI on the road for the first time!!
Post by: matchboy on 23 July 2009, 13:18
it makes sense the 18's being a harder ride as they (i assume) stiffen up the ride and you feel the bumps a bit more - either way its pretty irrelevant as after a while you soon get used to the harder ride!
Title: Re: Just seen the new GTI on the road for the first time!!

Generally accepted with all cars mate, bigger alloys and lower profile tyres result in a slightly harsher ride. Not rocket science.

Certainly true of the mkv GTi and the E46 M3. Handling is affected as well with bigger alloys. Just the laws of physics I suppose.

Remember that I do have 18's on my GTi so I am by no means slagging on off bigger wheels.

The car I test-drove had 18s, and no ACC.  I had 92-year-old mother in the passenger seat and she was well pleased.  However, I know what she's like.  She complains about every little bump, and it's like pulling back teeth to get her to do non-essential journeys of over about 10 miles.  I need all the help I can get here.

The salesman on that test drive was the first person who said the 17s would be slightly smoother than the 18s, and it seems well enough accepted by everyone.  I seriously don't think it's enough to be an issue at all for most purchasers though.  It's just that it's an issue for me - every little helps.

I think VW have enough people over a barrel on these 18s (which I still think are ridiculously overpriced) to justify their pricing strategy.  However, I just don't get off enough on staring at my car's wheels to make it a sensible investment.

i think its incorrect to state that VW have people over a barrel with regards the 18's.  They are clearly better in terms of looks and resale and are therefore a sensible option to go for.  And is £400 really that much?  Over 3 years I don't think so!

£400 for rather lovely OE 18" wheels is well worth it, and seemingly essential on th MKVI.

I don't want to sound blunt here, bu are you buying the car or is your mother ? I get the feeling that is she feels a bump on 18's she's gonna feel bumps on 17's cause they dont miraculously dissapear. Has she seen the state of UK roads ? they are a disgrace. Bumps are normal too, you also want to feel the road through the car/steering wheel. If she is a large part of you're driving journeys maybe you'd have been better off going for a different car than the GTI ? Something more comfy for her.

It's compromise.  The GTi is for me.  I compromise by getting the smoothest running GTi specs I can, because she lives with me, so it's also "her" car.  I have also got the ACC, so I can firm it up when I'm driving alone if I want to.

I wasn't really serious about the "over a barrel" part.  I can see that these wheels are worth it to a significant number of posters.  So, by definition, they're worth it.

However, in spite of appreciating that they do look nice, they're not worth it to me.  As I said, I just don't get off enough on admiring my car's wheels.

If they'd still made a 306 GTi in 2003, I'd have had a new one then.  Now, I wouldn't even go on the forecourt for what they're offering.

Maybe I should have looked at the Mk IV in 2003.  But the Peugeot was still only five years old, and I was happy with it, so as I couldn't replace it with a new one (which is what my business partner did with his Vauxhall Omega at that time), I just kept it.

lol, 'plug' would have been funnier!

the mk 4 was v slow, we had two of them - lovely to drive but shouldn't really have warrented the GTI badge IMO.  the pug was probably better then - but not now!  when does your GTI turn up?

^ Depends what GTI you had. The 1.8T wasnt by any means that fast (150bhp) but give it a remap and its very nippy (200bhp). Didnt have a very good chassis though :(

From 2002 they came out the factory in 180bhp form aswell.

Oh, the Pug wiped the floor with the Mk IV on Top Gear at the time.  In 1998.  I think they stopped making it in 1999 though.

I haven't even got a build date yet, two weeks after ordering.  I phoned on Tuesday, and the dealer said there was no build week entered yet, try again Friday.  His original estimate was "maybe September".

its annoying isn't it, i've been waiting since 4th may lol!

as for the mk4, we have had two GTI's and then we had a v5 - the v5 would have destroyed the pug but the pug would have eaten the GTI's for breakfast as they were v slooooooooooow!!

You really think they where that slow? Did you have a 1.8T ? or the 2.0 ?
Title: Re: Just seen the new GTI on the road for the first time!!
Post by: Exonian on 23 July 2009, 16:51
I've had three 1.8Ts now and they're not that slow really. They are quite low revving but very flexible. They feel sluggish as the torque curve is very flat but their in gear performance is quite respectable.
If going by Clarksons comments on the Top Gear review, it actually sounds like he was rating the Pug much higher than the GTI but he was building it up to knock it down. He thought the Golf was a more balanced car overall. That's what a Golf GTI is supposed to be, it was never the quickest and never meant to be. VW used to have good fun poking competitors with that point in their advertising.

I'm no mk4 fanboy either. Preferred the contemporary Leon Cupra. Same chassis but just drove better. Cupra R that much better again.

i had the 2.0 litre - that was slow!  the 1.8T wasn't slow, neither was the v5!  still, i would have taken a slow mk 4 over a pug (no offence rolfe!) as i don't like french cars.  the 1.8T and v5 were nice cars, i certainly had no complaints with the v5 (apart from how thirsty it was!)

If going by Clarksons comments on the Top Gear review, it actually sounds like he was rating the Pug much higher than the GTI but he was building it up to knock it down. He thought the Golf was a more balanced car overall.

If you listen to what he said, the only reason he gave for preferring the Golf was that it was available in a 5-door version.  (I could have understood it if he'd down-rated the Pug because of the oversteer, but he actually praised that!)

Having lived with the car for 11 years, and having compared it to both the Mk III (at the time) and the Mk VI (now), I can say that it has all the other virtues Clarkson praised the Mk IV for - the huge boot, the neatly-folding split back seats, the air conditioning, the trip meter, everything.  It even has rain-sensing automatic wipers, which the Golf didn't, back then.

If he'd said, "that oversteer is frankly dangerous, don't go near it," then fine.  But he said, "that oversteer makes the car the best friend you'll ever have.  But buy the Golf because it comes in a five-door version."  Since when was five doors the make-or-break criterion for a hot hatch?  He was obviously struggling to make excuses for the Golf because he loved the earlier models so much.

I first read Clarkson when I was a teenager and he was a new columnist in (I think it was) Performance Car magazine. Clarkson either makes his point like a jack hammer or speaks in riddles where you have to read between the lines. I haven't re-watched that clip since it was on TG many moons ago and can't at the moment 'cos me internet connection is ballsed for some reason but I think he was alluding(sp) to the fact that the Pug was more fun but the Golf easier to live with (hence the 5 door comment). Oversteer is downright dangerous on the public roads anyhow, fine if you're on a track and know how to drive properly, which I don't.

Stop getting misty eyed about 306s Morag, face up to it, you've consigned the poor thing to the crusher......

Nicely phrased Alan! I think?  :lipsrsealed:
The 2.0 8v and even worse the NA 1.8 20V was never called a GTI in the Fatherland, it was a Golf Sport. We had it in the UK 'cos VW UK know we're a bunch of badge snob suckers. IMO!
The only proper mk4 GTI was the 1.8T, which just happened to have the steering from a ship and the suspension from a hovercraft. Should've been the other way round maybe?

Well, you can see from my other posts that I'm not a boy racer, and I'm far keener on "easy to live with" than "fun".  That was part of the reason for getting rid of the XR2 - it was a little bit too much "fun", and it honestly wasn't the right image.  The Peugeot is nothing like that.  It looks like any normal car.  It's so easy to live with that it's practically having to be prised from my cold dead hands right now.  Apart from the oversteer (which didn't seem to be an issue for Clarkson), and the 5-door option, there wasn't a single thing mentioned about the Mk IV that wasn't equally true for the Peugeot.  You can get half of Ikea in it.  I've moved house twice with it, and a more willing and capacious workhorse I simply couldn't have asked for.  (I'm actually mildly concerned that the Mk VI might not be quite so big in its load capacity - I know it will take the wheelchair but I'm taking the bicycle on trust....)

I wasn't aware of the oversteer thing, because it's never done it to me.  Probably because I don't drive round corners like that.  Just as well, really!  (It did spin off the road once when I hit what I can only assume was black ice on a roundabout, fortunately coming to rest on a patch of grass upright and without hitting anything, but I don't know that any other car would have handled that one any better.)  In a way, it was probably more suited to me, wanting the power for overtaking on the straight and fast travel on clear roads, rather than someone into mad cornering.

Now, should I give mad cornering a try when I get the Mk VI?

Stop getting misty eyed about 306s Morag, face up to it, you've consigned the poor thing to the crusher......
(only kidding)

Oh, don't go on about it.   I know this is the right time to change, because it's simply not worth spending any more money on it, and do I really want to go on another year with no aircon, and a wonky passenger seat, and a gearbox slipping out of third, and a sunroof letting in a bit, and a scratch on one wing?  And nobody is going to give me £2,000 for it in another year.  But it's still running like an absolute cracker, starts first turn of the key, leaves most other things standing....

The fact that the Mk VI is so totally and comprehensively gorgeous is the only thing reconciling me to this!

Rolfe.

It's not that gorgeous it has the arse of a 2004 toureg and Monza alloys that have been around for 5 years. It's a shame because it could have been something special instead it smacks of VW development  penny pinching.

Just seen one in white on the motorway on 17" alloys. Not too keen but I didn't like the mk5 when it was first released. Just looked like every other mk6 Golf I have seen but with GTI badges and a twin exit exhaust :(

Heathen.  No way does the GTI look anything like a normal mark 6.  It's an all round nicer looking car and the split exhausts just add to that great look.  You are probably just jealous cos you've not got one.

Title: Re: Just seen the new GTI on the road for the first time!!
Post by: Exonian on 24 July 2009, 05:11
Well Monzablue, exactly how different does a mk2 Golf GTI look to a normal mk2 Golf? Not very. VW have always played the difference down and that's one of the attractions. In fact how different did a mk4 GTI look to a base model? Not the slightest!
Admittedly the 17s don't bring out the best in the cars looks but remember the mk2? They came as standard on steel wheels in 8v guise, same as a poverty spec model.

Key differences to a std mkvi is the engine and gti styling touches (I'm going to ignore cost!)

Key difference to a mkv is the interior quality and the fact that it is new.

I know there is little difference to the mkv, but all the subtle updates add up and I can afford a new car, so why not :)

Nail on head indeed!  I'm changing my car for the first time in over 11 years.  I read a lot about the Mk V, and watched the Top Gear review.  I'm actually quite pleased that the Mk VI is just a subtle evolution of this apparently winning formula, and that I'm not being a guinea-pig for a completely new design.

But if I'd decided to change last year, and had bought a Mk V, I wouldn't be feeling bad about my car, or wanting to spend a shed-load of money to "upgrade".

As a mk5 owner well sort of lol. The reason to go 17" over 18" is simply. The 18" wheels due to there polish/lac finish get whats known as white worm. Were the lac lifts or cracks or comes unstuck or gets damaged due to salt, stone chip, curbing what ever and causes white lines to show. This is a huge problem with this type of finish to alloy wheels. Everymake suffer it with this type ofpolished finish and the mk5 monzaII suffer it quite bad. Most cars over 2 years old have suffered it or had wheels replaced by VW. This meens constant refurbs of the wheels are needed over the years so they don't look nasty. So for long term ownership prospects the 17s are a better longlife solution.
Its why i went originally for the 17s with the mk5 after suffering it with SEATs and seeing it with many other makes including Audi and BMW. I only went to 18s as i was offered a straight swop from a family member and due to the 17s painted silver colour just did not work with shadow blue.

and i can confirm it looked the doggy's do-dah's - amazing in the flesh!  the deep pearl black looked fantastic.  although he did have the 17's on it which never ceases to amaze me why people don't upgrade to the 18's.  still, it looked great and made me even more excited about mine (if that was possible!)

18's look better. 17's better for old folk or those with young kids...

Personally I'm not a fan of the Mk6 - interior is nice but I think it looks too fat and the front grill just isn't as nice.

As for 17s vs 18s - when EVO did some tyre testing with a Mk5 Gti, it was faster around the track with 17s!  Plus they make less road noise, oh and 17s are more individual as everyone else has slightly whitewormed Monza 18s!  :lipsrsealed:

Of course this has nothing to do with me having 17s on my Mk5.......

Like's been said the 17's will give a slightly better ride, and going by the mk5 tests will give a little bit more speed too.  But I doubt any of this is particularly noticable in real life but looks sure will be.

For some reason the mk5 can just about get away with 17's (or maybe I'm just kidding myself as thats what I've got) but the mk6 looks a bit silly with them..

It's a bit of a shame VW weren't a bit more inventive with the mk6 alloys but then again why mess with a winning formula

PS Emeye that is an awesome picture.  Very nice

If they'd dropped the silly exhausts and gave it the usual twin style back similar to the mk6 TDi I would like it, but they didn't so the mk6 sucks

Also don't like the grill with 2 vertical red stripes, prefer the mk5 stripe as it's obvious with out being to in your face.

Interior's nice though :afro: but that can be retro fitted to a mk5 no doubt

Personally I was totally attracted to the mk6 GTI because of the split exhaust. I think it looks awesome and for that matter I really like the front too.  Guess it's all down to a matter of taste but imo mk6 gti is streets ahead of the mk5.
Title: Re: Just seen the new GTI on the road for the first time!!
Post by: sambo on 24 July 2009, 22:30
I'm not here to ruffle feather's like everyone else did! but personally the exhausts just look too aftermarket, they seem to far apart and don't 'fit' into the body shape, like the mk5 r32 did for example. Maybe they could have got away with it for an R but this is a GTI, it's supposed to be an all round, hot hatch with understated looks. Also the grill I think is just me being fussy but I genuinely hate it for some reason.

The front looks nice, although I prefer the mk5 still at the moment (not just cose I have one), saw a white mk6 tdi a while back which looked very smart from the rear, nice and smooth and tidy.

ALL IMO of course

Either way, i'm not buying one, nor do I intend too, will probably skip to the mk7 if I get another golf after this one. Hope everyone who's getting one enjoy's it every bit though, certainly ain't a bad car to own :afro:

I think I've said before that although the nose of the mk6 is very nice I do prefer the mk5.  As for the rest of the car, it does look stunning and pictures don't do the arse end any justice, it looks fabulous in the flesh.

Life would be dull if we all had the same tastes.

Most owners myself included with the mk5 have suffered with the 18s corrosion problems. For long term ownership prospect like i suspect Rolfe has for the mk6 and myself the 17s maybe a better option it comes down to looks v practicality+longlife or after a few replacments from VW next time it happens after 3 years old you get them refurbed in a painted finish.

Notice that any polished/lac finished wheel suffers this problem

funny, i had my mk 5 for 2 and a half years and my 18s were spotless, didn't get any of those issues.  like someone said, if that happens just get them replaced under warrenty - job done!  at the end of the day unless you're an old granny who can't handle a firm ride or you only drive on a track day in day out, there is only one option and that's the 18's.

I think your right i was just at my local dealer this afternoon. He said he had sold 2 white ones last week out the showroom and this week sold the silver & Carbon ones in the showroom as well as sold a white one to a mk5 GTI owner who had just been for a test drive. People seemed to be lining up to look and drive the mk6 GTI this afternoon when i was there!
