Title: Car Finally Ordered !!!
Post by: VWKev on 21 July 2009, 18:17
Got my GTI ordered finally !

Don't think its fair to leave exact prices as its not a 'normal' deal but what I will say it was cheaper than the internet prices (dealdrivers, broadspeed) so I'm well happy.

My Spec :

Golf GTI - Manual (3dr, Candy White)
18" Monza Shadow Alloys
Full Leather
Bi-Xenon Lights
ACC
RCD510 + Dynaudio Speakers
Winter Pack
Luxury Pack
DAB Radio

Don't have any details, yet, sorting out paperwork tomorrow, deposit made and regarding the delivery of the car, the garage I'm getting it from has managed to check its allocation and it will be making changes to a car they have waiting to come in, so that it matches my spec. So that should help speed up the delivery times.

Can sit back and relax a bit now.

Thanks all. Yeah it was a long time coming, but I stuck to my guns and waited till I could afford it and now holiday is paid this week too, so all good.

Price was only a little below Internet prices nothing to get excited about, but low enough for me to add ACC to my spec.

Thanks guys

What did make me hesitate today was that I was offered a 'cheap' Audi, so I said, what like an s3 ? He said. Yep if thats what you wanted.

Said, thanks but my heart is set on the GTi.

I know your saying this in Jest Neil, but have you actually read 99% of my posts ? I couldn't give a toss if people are on side or not.

I will however take pic of my order from the dealer when i get it, just to keep the niggling doubters minds straight. then after I've been made to do that I'll jump to another forum.

Rolfe.

When I was talking to them I did have a lengthly chat about the delivery times etc. I mentioned that I am hearing 12-14 weeks now, they did say yes but every dealer has an allocation of cars and should the dealer you buy from manage to track one of their allocated cars through their system thats not on order for someone else, they can actually then tweak that build to your spec which will then speed up the time it takes for you to get your car. Did they not discuss that with you Rolfe ? I'm gonna have to get the time confirmed tomorrow when I sort paperwork out, but I'm positive they mentioned 8 weeks.
Title: Re: Car Finally Ordered !!!

No, he just looked up what was already available, but although there was a 5-door DSG in the colour I wanted, it had none of the extras I wanted.  So he said, that'll have to be a factory build, how long is the MOT on your Peugeot?  When I said March, he said that's fine, it might actually be here by September.

The other dealer I talked to said 13 weeks irrespective of specification, so they're all singing much the same tune.  I think anything else on that is just luck.

Rolfe.
Title: Re: Car Finally Ordered !!!
Post by: keelaw on 22 July 2009, 07:48
i echo kev's experience in that my dealer said if there is a car on the build list that hasn't been bought, it is possible to take that car and tweak to my spec.

sadly i don't think he's managed to find one :(

Title: Re: Car Finally Ordered !!!
Post by: R32UK on 22 July 2009, 09:38
Ok just to help clear this up for you guys... now this is how it worked for the mk5 so im quite sure it wont have changed much.

Factory order you will be told is 12wks. Expect delivery to take anywhere upto 15wks. Then it just depends on how commited your dealer is.

VW will already know the trend of what most orders consist of so will have their own runs of vehicles they are producing, most likely not far from basic spec. Anyone getting there car before the 12wk period will no doubt have one of these cars with the extras they required adding to them if possible.

As far as I know nothing has changed, but dealers will search around for other dealers with cars that they can take with similar specs to keep their costs down.

Pretty sure, no reason to think he's stringing me along.

He said he could see a number of recent orders on the system, and some cars had build weeks of 33 and 34 allocated, but mine was still sitting there without a build week.  He said they update the system about twice a week, so try again Friday, but if he happens to notice a build week appear for my car, he'll phone me.

Well done mate, all that hard work finally paid off and you've managed to create a real buzz on the forum by ordering a car!! Maybe you should get in touch with Max Clifford and arrange some kind of publicity event??

Seriously though, hope the wait isn't too long for you and enjoy your GTI once it arrives!

Dunno whether he's only seeing orders from that dealership, or that chain, though.  I was assuming he was looking at all VW orders from his own group, but I could be wrong.  I guess it's possible he was specifically viewing all current GTi builds.

I've ordered one, though the pics I've seen seem smoked, and I'd rather have relatively clear glass.  I like it in Scotland for brightening the whole shebang up on winter days, letting you see the moon on clear nights, and a bit of fresh air on nice days when it's not so hot you need the aircon.

Several people told me I was an idiot to spec one on the Peugeot, because of it having aircon, but I never regretted it - even when it was shut and the aircon on, the light was worth it.  And then when the aircon died in October 2006, it allowed me not to spend £600 on getting it fixed (not worth it for the age of the car).

In all seriousness tho, I've looked and looked and nothing else interests me, just the sunroof. But mind you the Flat tyre indicator is getting a tad annoying.

Get thee behind me, Satan!

Like them well enough, but not enough to add more money to the order, especially with the consensus that the ride is slightly less smooth.

Kev, get the bloody flat tyre indicator!  It's a swindle, it should be standard, but it's only £35.  It's worth it.  (I had it on my original specs, hoping that it was the sort of item they'd just throw in.  You can see with the online configurator, that adding certain items to an already well-specced car doesn't increase the price on the last screen - I tried that with the DAB radio on my specs, and it added it without putting the price up.)

Whether you'd get it thrown in when you're already getting a keen discount I don't know, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I still like the effect of the moonlight in the car though.

Does it tell you if your tyres are flat only ? Or does it tell you your tyre pressure over a certain distance after measuring tyre size and weight then giving you the warning that your loosing pressure ?

VWKev please do enlighten us as to how you think it works... I know but like other posters said it doesnt do what it says on the tin afaik.

Gladly. but I don't think, I know.

If you get an immediate flat, or a blowout, the FTI wont tell you sh!t, it hasnt had time to. So for the people saying 'If your tyres are flat you'll know anyway' is true, but its not designed to tell you when your tyres are flat (as the other poster said, thats obvious) its designed to tell you if your loosing tyre pressure.

If you get a slow puncture, your FTI will calulate over a certain distance the pressure in the tyre, the wall rim size and the weight of the wheel to give you an accurate reading of the PSI. It will need time to do this, so it works very well for the job its designed to do. You will then in turn have enought ime to change the wheel or get it repaired. Thats the job its supposed to do.

Thats not how it works.  It doesn't tell you the PSI at all.  It just gives you a warning light and a beep.

And I would echo others experience of the system in that it doesnt' work at all.  Didn't spot my slow puncture.  And yes, I did calibrate it properly.

It relies on the ABS sensors and compares the rotational speed to what it should be.  Its a cheap system unlike the Audi system that has a pressure sensor in the wheel and does actually measure the pressure.

Title: Re: Car Finally Ordered !!!
Post by: Exonian on 26 July 2009, 11:38
The only time I had my flat tyre thingy start beeping at me was when my car decided that it had a deflating tyre whilst I was in the outside lane of a motorway overtaking a string of middle lane hoggers. I was on my way to the airport, four people in the car and a boot full of luggage, so naturally thought ''Goodness me, I've now got to quickly pull over and unload six tons of stuff out of the boot, get filthy dirty and try and remember how to use the widow maker jack, hang on a minute......the car is driving normally.....''
So having instantly slowed right down and carefully moved lanes ready to stop on the hard shoulder, I then decided to proceed carefully as the next junction was only a mile or so away. Once I got there I pulled over and had a good look at all of the tyres (I'd checked the pressures before I set off) and all appeared normal. So I re-set the tyre thingy and carefully drove around a while. Nothing.
What I reckon happened was that the sensors decided that my suitcases were a flat tyre and thus triggered a bogus alarm. Better safe than sorry I guess.

So the moral of the story is that the thing only costs £35 and it may or may not work. On the mk5 VW put the tyre thingy as a standard feature and the decent computer as a £50 extra. On the mk6 it's the other way round minus £15. Bloody daft and both may as well be standard features.

That was what I was trying to say in my original post by saying it did not in our instant either by saying it did not spot our slow puncture over a weeks use. Maybe I should have expanded or explained it better and said it had a pallet nail in the tyre that I know were it came from and so it spent a week slowly deflating. Until the rotational speed was a large enough difference for it to notice and trigger. It also did not spot the second time this happened (yes i reset it). (maybe our lass just does not drive hard enough or is heavy enough to upset it lol). If anyone wants it so be it but real life experience 'v' theory (Im an engineer so know how both actually work ) has shown me its usefulness.

Anyway  i don't give a flying f... about it, each to there own,  i won't be bothering this time for my mk6 myself  But as someone so nicely put it i will be waste money on other options  Like service pack, Xenons and 18s

It will have to be standard soon anyway due to new laws.

Anyway back to the original topic time now i think.
Have you made up your mind VWkev on your final spec?
