Title: Advice before i buy please, 16v or 8v? Colour? etc
Post by: Hector-8 on 20 July 2009, 15:18
I have just joined this forum as it seems very active and i have read a few projects and got alot out of them. I have just recently sold my e46 m3 as im looking to buy a house, but still want to drive something with a bit of class and take pride getting her ready for shows etc.... I have went to look at an oak green 16v 1991 gti so far and had a drive, now i know it will never compete with the m3 in alot of areas and as i have never owned a mk2 golf i need suitable and honest advice.

This will be used as my second car as i have a company van. I dont mind about fuel issues, mpg doesnt matter. I would like something fairly reliable and would need to know the following?

Main areas of rust?
Differences and experiences of 8v vs 16v?
Tuning a 8v, is there much more I could get from it?
Tuning a 16v, same again?
Im looking at a white, oak green or red gti? Do any colours hold value more?
What should i realistically expect to pay for a "minter"?
Does the 8v'ers come with electrics and same extras as the 16v's?(as i have only been really looking at 16v's so far)
What would be your ideal mk2 gti spec?

Thank you. I dont expect everyone to answer to every question but as much input as poss is much apprecriated,

thank you

What would be your ideal mk2 gti spec?

One with as little rust on the bodyshell as possible, because anything else that has failed can be unbolted and replaced.

Golf2 8V will upgrade to 2.0 16V from a Golf3 16V pretty easily, although you might like to source a set of Corrado hubs, front brakes and driveshafts.  This will give you an easy 170bhp and +35MPG on a run.

For a minter you might be looking at the thick end of £4k.

Mr Cunnyfunt on here is flogging his mint 16V.  It's a tidy and cherished motor.

£8001 for a mint 16v 3 door in Oak Green

Join the club!!

On a serious note £4000 will not buy a mint 16v in a strong colour . £5000 + for good ones with under 100,000 miles

Are seen as a classic for the future

i blame 5th gear for these stupid prices

buy a normally priced one and enjoy driving it  :afro:

neither are gonna feel quick after an m3, but the 16v is a better all round car than the 8v

main rust is rear arches, around the petrol tank/filler neck, rear panel, wiper holes front and rear, round the windscreen

oak green seems to be the most expensive colour

electrics are pretty random, its not really anything to do with the engine. you have more chance of leccy windows and power steering on the later cars though

You could buy mine for 4500. I need to import it first though and sort out a few issues. Then its up for sale to make way for my next project.

if your thinking both 8v and 16v don't compare to the m3 which is obvious have you considered a G60? maybe quite abit more to buy and abit harder to source but maybe it would be more suited to you especially if it's basically going to be a toy and you arnt bothered about the exspense it's just whether u can live with left hand drive? Just an idea to put in the thinking pot?

Yeah i had a look at your motor mate, absolute stunner, really nice car, left hand drive puts me off, so thats the rallye out also... Just after a standard gti but between the 8v and 16v, with as much extras as possible. Thanks for the ideas tho. I would prob do up to 150 miles per week in one if i can get one. After seeing your red one im torn between red and white with oak green 3rd.

So a 16v is a better driver then?

I absolutely love the look of these cars and nows the time for me to buy one.

As far as I'm aware, the 8V is tourqier at lower revs, so more fun to drive around town. No doubt somebody will correct me.

I personally have an 8V, and love it. Plenty of grunt when you put your foor down. But having neverdriven a 16v, I can't really comment.

hope that helps a little.

The little extra torque in the 16v is cancelled out by its extra weight, thats why 8v seems punchier low down.........I've had 2 16v before my current 8v, 8v is much more flexible low down in everyday use regardless of torque figures and the 8v digi is more tolerant of lower octane fuels. Mind you 16v goes like stink when you get past 4500rpm, if you don't mind living up there its great. Bodywork condition is really the most important issue with these now, make sure you drive any car from stone cold to check for second gear 'crunch' as well.

Dont like the way the white one on ebay has a different gear knob and tinted windows, also electrics pulled out of it and in those pictures is sitting quite high, so prob has no engine in it in these pics. Dear only knows who built it up

Hi hector did you see the capri green one in ballyclare on the autotrader /usedcarsni site .
Looks a very clean car maybe colour not your first choice but worth alook anyway ,- iwould agree with the rest here that body work is most important, very expensive to sort out.-unless you can do it yourself.

I think that's a wise decision,if it's not exactly what u want then ull never be 100% satisfied, colour is an important factor as it's not a cheap thing to change,I'm sure one will come along soon.
Get a White one you know that's what u really want! Ha ha there's a pic of my White 16v on the sexy wheels post, take a look see if it inspires you,I'll carry on keeping an eye out for ya.
