Title: 3 door or 5 door?
Post by: russ_1380 on 19 July 2009, 17:42
HI Guys

New to golfs and new on here.

I'm looking for a 16v with a budget of around £1600.  A tough one I know.

I'd like a standard car, I've seen some advertised that will suit my needs.

My question is; is there any noticeable difference between 5 door and 3 door variants?  I know 3 doors are probably better looking and more desirable, (easier to sell) but 5 door would be far better suited to my needs.  I have only test driven 3 door type and really enjoyed it!

What do you guys think?

Cheers

Russ.

The only real difference is the insurance premium,if 5doors suites u better then thats the one to go for.

Iam guessing a 3 door is higher on the premiums?

Yeah they are, not a huge difference though.

It's really down to personal preference....though the way forward is really 5 door :P :D

To me a 3dr looks better.

I'd have a 3 door if it wasn't my daily and didn't have to get the kids in the back. Having a 5 door is more practicle if you often have passengers.

For practicality, a five door. That's what I have and I love it. I hate the idea of having to get out and move seats to let rear passengers out.

Or do what a previous owner of my car did.  Buy a 5 door, and smooth off the rear handles.

That way it still looks rubbish, and you lose practicality, sound!!

yep I agree with all that's been said if it's a daily and u need to get people in and out etc then 5 doors are probably better than 2 butttttt!!! if it's a weekend car like mine is and it's main purpose it just fun!! then 3 doors is the way mines a 3 door and I wouldn't change it! again it's a personal choice thing again some like the look of the 5 doors and some the 3 and I'm personally in the 3 door party but 3 or 5 it's still a mk2 16v golf so ull be smiling everytime u drive it!  :wink:P

cheers guys

Good advice.  I'd have tools/wood in the back so 5 door is better for me.  Apologies I didn't make my first post clearer lads; I meant is there and difference in the chassis/handling between 3 and 5 doors?

The only real reason I want a golf is for the handling, the ones I drove have been brilliant for a road car.
Cheers

Buy on the condition, not the number of doors.

Happy hunting!

surely 3 door has better handling. I can't imagine that it would make that much of a difference though. Improve the handling with renewed bushes all round and a decent suspension kit

Exactly, always buy a mk2 on the condition of the body!

surely 3 door has better handling.

Why?

Rumour has it the 3 door is less rigid, so would be sloppier handling-wise.

I originally wanted a 3 door but came across my oak green 5 door. Price and condition where right so had to have it. I think the 5 doors tend to be better looked after too.

5 doors look just as nice, imho. I don't get what the fuss is about.  :undecided:

A real nice red 5 door for sale on here.

I like it A LOT!  Looks the business.

I still have a bit of research to do though...I searched this forum for buying guides.  All I could find was threads telling people to use the search facility and the Matey Matey guide.  I'll have another search

I don't don't think it makes much difference on handling to be honest. Five doors are heavier, but in my opinion, looking at it from an engineers point of view, safer because they are less prone to consateenering, (spelling :undecided:) in a rear or front impact. When the doors are shut, alot of strength is gained from the doors as well as the added strengthening around the door apertures.

I'll stick to 5 door as preference then.  Just searching for buying info, i've found some more now

This is the most useful point on here, well in mate

Condition was how I ended up with My 5 door 16v! I always cursed 5 door cars but I ach really quite like the stance they have!

I must have speant about 4 1/2 months looking and looking  until the right one came up, its worth holding on as I was tempted by a oak green one which 'luckily' sold, as it was then readvertised by the new owner on ebay less than a month later and it was sold for around £2k in the first place so something must have been hiding

I'd say if you find a gem of a car then buy it whether it has 3 or 5 doors. Unless you *really* want the three door look and wouldn't be happy with 5, or regularly have rear passengers and 3 doors would be a total pain. Bit of a no brainer really!

3 door every time.

YOU dont have to get out ever, The passenger does.

I just claim my seat doesnt tilt, and people buy it.

5 door = children

I've owned both, it's noticeable.  :nerd:

As someone else has said, buy on condition, not the number of doors.
Unless you are dead set on one or the other of course !

I would agree with the five door crew!
I think they rock and can look awesome too, but i have to admit only a 3 door can pull off that aggresive look!

Spot the 5 door

It's not that he's been away, it's that he's been replaced by a friendly alien.  Proof (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=123601.10).  If that was really Slick, that thread would be locked.
