ok so i finally got the rear beam on, went to put my new gti handbrake cables on and they seem too long.
now would the gti have a different handbrake mech?
i did take the metal sleeves off the car, that take the cable into the cabin..... got a feeling that they are needed. cant really explain it, but they make it so less cable is in the cabin and it is more slack under the car if ya get what i mean.....
only problem being is i had to take the sleeves out cause the old handbrake cables are stuck in them. so i think i need new ones, which means a trip to the stealers...... joy.
any shine light on this situation?
cheers.

anyone changed there cables before and can shed some light here?
going to vw today to get some new sleeves, hopefully that will sort it :)

I take it you had drum brakes before then? if so yes you need MK3 GTI handbrake cables

got them but they are too long.... thinking i need to use the metal sleeves to take the cables into the car. i guess that stops excess cable moving into the cabin, so the cable is just slack. hope that makes sense :undecided:
cheers :)

yeah you do, if you pulled the slieves out with the old cables you need to put them back in! easily done both of mine did the same when i swapped the cables over on my MK2 GTI. bit of a pain to get them back in as you have to lift the carpet to see the tubes. even worse in a mk3 as ya gotta remove the console surround, which I found to be a mare unless i was doing it wrong

yeah shouldnt to bad getting them in. centre console came out real easy on mine just a couple screws, mayb you were trying too hard :D :D :D
only problem i got is i took the sleeves out cause they are stuck on the old cables. not a chance of reusing them lol. just going to grab some new ones at vw.
thanks once again! got to say, following your advice for converting to gti brakes all round and keeping 4 stud has worked a treat! :afro:

yeah mine were pretty jammed, but i was buggered if i was going to let them beat me so I got medievil with the cables and got em loose! dunno what I was doing wrong with the console, i found it was an utter sod to get it past the handbrake. or maybe it was the centre console I struggled with? dunno I must've blacked out most of the memories from that day, MK3 heater matrix swap is something I dont want to have to do again

lol.
btw you cant be telling anyone that you struggled with things, you are meant to know all and be awesome. your ruining your reputation!! :D :D :D
haha only joking. thanks again m8 :afro:

To be honest I have trouble getting the centre console out too lol. I find it easier with the seats removed though because there's more room to get it past the handbrake.
-
ahh sorry you mean the centre console, never tried taking that out... only need to take the handbrake surround off to access the handbrake.
LL ;)
-
yeah it must have been the console i had problems with, didnt take the seats out so had to give it a bit of welly to get it in.
-
note to self: take more of rubjonny's advice and dont attempt to change the heater matrix yourself!
-
well its not massively difficult, its just it takes ages as you have so much extra crap in the way of the heater housing. the dash is more tricky to remove compared to the mk2 as well, tip make sure you have the right sool to undo the special bolts on the side! once thats out then you have the knee bar which is in the way, gotta pull that forward. unforunatly steering column is mounted to it with shear bolts, i undid the uj instead and left column bolted up. need to take all the plastic side trims off in the footwells and peel eadge of carpet back to get the knee bar to come forward enough, which is a pain as the sill strips cover the trims etc. got there in the end! Took a full day to do it, easily twice as long as same job in mk2.
