Title: robz' mk3 gti 8v - dusty mauve more door!!
Post by: robz on 17 July 2009, 21:41
hi,
i thought i'd start a thread here rather than in the projects section as i quite like to hear other peoples views and thoughts:)

i'll start with a background...
i bought the car at the beginning of the year after seeing it and falling in love with it, i was looking at mk2's but i just saw potential!

this is the car as i bought it ...

i havent really done too much, as this was meant to be a sensible ish car after the disaster of a rado i had before, that turned out to be a lemon, lol.
i was happy with the way it looked, and just wanted to eventually see if the wolfsburg edition actually existed or not, but then i had a crash... single track road, blind corner, wet, not good, lol. was only doing 10 most and managed to wreck the front end and the car i hit was a 4 week old peugot, woops!
so we settled it out of insurance, as that we felt was the best way, and i have now got standard lights/grill and one fog/indicator unit left :(
so i came to thinking the other morning, i dont wanna spend silly money on another set of hella quads, i want something different, so i have chosen the vento front conversion... this has been discussed on another thread and although it may be commen thing at the minute i have never seen one round me and i generally like it, so thats me mind made up, lol.

i was gonna take pictures today of how it stands now, but its pissed down all bloody day so decided not to, lol!!

yesterday i replaced a broken wheel bearing where the race had a massive crack on it, lol, scary :(
i also finished rollin my arches, patched up the rust i found and stuck the plastic wheel arch covers on with lots of evostick  impact adhesive! lol.

so, i think the mrs wants the pc now, so will update more as and when i think of it and get some current pics up too when i get chance,
happy reading and i hope i didnt drone on for too long :)

well today is the day, its going in for diagnostic testing...
hope fullly it'll say air flow meter, cos thats my suspision so far, although as the gf polo decided to throw a wobbly yesterday, we took the golf down to leicester instead, and it was absolutly brill!!
a few occasional power losses and a bit rough, but mostly a real nice drive and plenty of (safe) overtaking, which i havent done since the mini really :(
in love again i think, lol
so will see what today brings!!
, and its sunny, so might go and take pics now... quick :)

Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 23 July 2009, 08:31
hey all
well i was gonna update last night, but got called out till late :(

well the car went in on monday for diagnostics... and nothing, lol
no codes what so ever, so now im back to square one again.
so i think the next move is replace the air mass meter... as mine has silicone all around it and looks to have been messed with.
so that is all i can think of for now!!
i still cant find the camera cable fpr up to date pics, but i finish early today, so will have a look with the gf:)
till later!!;)
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 27 July 2009, 09:29
hey all,
right then, gf found the bloody camera cable finally!!
so first thing i do when i get home is put the pics up!! woo!!
was out with the car the other day and gave it a good wash, and nearly finished getting all the black plastics black again,
also on the fleabay last night and grabbed myself some standard indicators and fog blanks for the front for £10.50,
that'll do for me for a while untill i can get some of the iced one peice sets again!!
you'll love the pic of my old wheel bearing... cant beleive my wheel was still on, lol!!
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 27 July 2009, 19:27
right, home a t last, woo!

so i'll start with the car as it stands now!!

also a picture of the lovely exhaust my gf got me for my b'day... nice!
cant wait to get that on, lol!

im gutted though cos ive lost the wheel bearing race and pic of it:(
but it was a massive hole out of it anyway!! lol

ive also fitted 2 x jbl 6 x 9's on the parcel shelf along with the mutant amp, i know now that this wont give great sound quality, but im only after a little boost to the system :)
still need to trim the speakers around edge, and make a little cover for it all when im leaving the car in an area i dont like, lol.

so thats it all so far it think.

next will be my bargain indicators.
enjoy!
edit - i dont know what is going on with the 3rd one down, but i edited it on photobucket to be the right way up, and now it looks worse, lol.
will get better all round photos when i have done the front indicators and when its less sunny, thats my excuse for bad photos, lool!
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 28 July 2009, 21:38
ok, now ive stuck my leeds volkvest window stickers on ready, and hopefully got a working air mass meter on the way shortly to hopefullt this bloody hunting out!!
fingers crossed!!
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 29 July 2009, 18:09
hi all, well im  little pissed off today.
my mechanic popped into work today and said he had nothingto do and did i want him to have my car to get the exhaust on it, brill, i thought i was gonna have a new toy to play with, wrong!
the fatherless son is the wrong exhaust, even though i was told it was off the same year car as mine, either that or this mongoose cat back system on mine is all to cock :(
so im a little nobbed off now, cos this means it wont be on for the leeds volksfest :(
dont think my mechanic was overly impressed either as i wasted his time (im sure some alcohol his way will lighten him up, lol)
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 02 August 2009, 14:25
ok, the other day as you may have seen i asked about painting the standard gti lights - which i have now done!
i'll get some pics up later ort tomoz when i get the grill back on and tbh im more than impressed!!
i actually like the lights as they are, so that will do till i see the right vento front!! lol
akso wired up my amp to the speakers and fed the wire from the battery to the amp, so when i get a bit more time i will finish the wiring up and then i only have a few mmore things to do for the volksfest!!
soo excited!!
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 10 August 2009, 10:04
right, well i have been busy this past week - not really had chance to update on here,
ive given the car a good polishing and a good clean up, blacked all the bumpers, finished my red bull bonnet lifters, fitted a second hand air mass meter - which has totally changed the car, still not running right as the revs stick a little high and still occasionally the idle drops when sat there, but im  thinking thats the isv tbh - new metal vw valve caps, and a few more things that have gone into a blur, lol.
this weeks plans before leeds fest -
re fit n/s mud guard,
replace radio aerial earth,
fit new sill cover on o/s
paint rocker cover,
fill and paint bonnet damage,
possibly mesh front bumper,
thats all i can think of for now!
will get the pics up when i get chance!
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 29 August 2009, 09:44
hi all,
bit of an update...
got my list of jobs done apart from the meshing of the front bumper... didn't have time to work out how to attach it but never mind, lol.
also drilled the airbox last night, which seems to have made a nice smooth difference actually surprised!!
think a few more holes wont go a miss though, lol.
so winter plans are now...
vento front end,
weld drivers seat up so i dont fall into the back seat whilst driving again, lol,
re-spray wing,
mesh front bumpers,
mot, lol,
find nice back box,
and paint the engine.
my mate said that as i'd already started a red bull thing under the bonnet that i should carry it on, lol.
so i thought sod it, im gonna do it.
so have started painting the red bull emblem across the engine block an gear box, may take a while to do but its something different, lol.
will re sort all of the pics on the thread cos i cleaned my photo bucket up and then realised that it lost them on here :(
will try do that later.

new plan again :D
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 10 September 2009, 16:58
right - bit of an update!
having thought that my mot was not due till dec... i checked my paperwork and its due next month - cock!!
so i need 2 new tyres at the back - so gonna have 195's on as oppose to 205's,
drivers seat needs welding,
oil change and wynns oil stuff to hopefully stop it smoking so much and making me fail my emmission,
poss all my brake pipes need doing as they were an advisory last year :(,
and hopefully no more, but im worrying cos this will be the first mot i have put it through!!

on the progress front... i have got a cheapo strut brace thats in the process of being painted,
may tint the rear lights,
and i saw a golf round me that looks exactly like mine and poss has the same wheels on :(
not happy, so mine is defo getting this vento front on cos im not having that!!
also may have a few slats but in the wings for the fun of it, lol!
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - vento conversion and progress

Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 14 September 2009, 10:00
lol, sorry mate - moneys got a little tight over the past couple of months - so best buy food first hey ;)
my gf is gonna get it all for me for xmas at latest i think - but for now im just concentrating on the dreaded mot!!
i never said i was doing in world record time, lol!
we cant all have nice lookng cars like you mate ;)
im gonna throw this strut brace on for now and then take it off in a couple of months to to it properly i think!
still surprised you took your front off and put a mk3 back on :(
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - no longer a vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 25 September 2009, 13:58
right, bit of an update....
i have decided that spending my little money on a vento front end is pointless atm...
plus there seem to be a lot of people doing it which doesnt attract me at all!
so im going back to doing what i do best... and thats getting the bloody thing running and looking as good as possible without spending silly money!!
dont get me wrong if i get a vento front end for say £50 i cant say no... but i think my sh!t will turn purple and smell like rainbow sherbert first, so sod it:D
im gonna get my bonnet sorted and my wing sprayed to the colour of the car and then start replacing the things i broke in the crash instead of getting ahead of myself changing major bits!
obviously after this bloody mot!!

the car is burning oil loads now so maybe looking at ripping this engine apart and uprating bits as i go but one step at a time!

few pics of the car as it stands now -

i know they are sh!te pics but best i can do atm!

got some 195's to put on the back to stop the scrubbing completely hopefully,
and the car is going to the garage on the 8th for brake pipes to be checked and replaced if need be and weld my drivers seat up.
and im gonna do an oil change before then too!
cheers all!

What would be your ideal plans then?

Note that I've seen Vento fronts on eBay really cheap, at around £30-£40 before, I quite like my Golf front, and my Hella Twins () are getting sprayed soon but I MIGHT be tempted if I see a cheap one with an early grill in my car's colour or something if not I'll stick with my Golf.

Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - no longer a vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 01 October 2009, 10:15
hey,
ideal plans....
prob vr6 it... but im still debating on just really giving it a really grunty 8v engine (get it re built and various uprated parts, cams etc..) cos tbh... i quite like my 8v, and it seems that everyone is getting rid of em!!
i want my car to be a really good example of a mk3 golf gti, and stick the middle finger up to the "mk3 golf should never have been a gti people" lol
i dont need it to do 150mph, i just wanna get to the speed limit very fast and in style with a few head turns!!
im liking my front end now, so when i geta all the fk induction things and some nice smoked big indicators and smoked fake fogs it'll look the business!!
there was a gold mk3 in pvw a couple of months back... i want it to have that motorsport look without the halfords glint if you know what i mean :D
then get the paintwork upto scratch and maybe a different set of wheels...
louis on here showed me a pic of some ketchner classics (i think, lol) and they would set it down really well, but for now the rs4's are sh!t hot, lol!
hows that... your probably bored sh!tless now arent ya... ;)
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - no longer a vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 06 October 2009, 13:59
ok, quick update -
had my tyres done on saturday... slightly narrower thatn the previous ones - so lots of stretch, looks awesome!!
however whilst it was on the ramp...
i had a look at the brake pipes - not too bad - should be ok i think - so i cleaned them up,
found 4 spots of rust on the sills, 2 near both front jacking points and 2 halfway down the car,
changed my oil back to 10/40 with the wynns oil treatment to stop the smoking and revive the seals (hopefully)
cleaned the oil breather pipe and new oil filter,
and all in the pissing rain...:(
lol,
so in the garage thursday for pre mot check - welding the drivers seat and probable welding happening then... also taking the front heatshield off cos its had 2 welds and now its going to its death, fed up of the bloody thing!
and then hopefullly 12 months motoring... hopefully
cheers!!
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - no longer a vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 08 October 2009, 19:40
well it never made mot mot... :(
sills are fooked!!
so back in next wed for welding and mot next thursday...:(

one of many bad things to happen to me today!
had a sh!t day but on the plus side my mechanic said the car was in good nick otherwise!
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - no longer a vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 12 October 2009, 09:17
well gonna have a rant....
since the end of last week... my/a vac pipe has split/blocked again after only 3 months so gotta sort that too now...
sometimes this car tests my patience!
the oil burning is only getting worse...
i get the feeling that im gonna have to have an engine re-build at some point soon...
im thinking i cant financialy support a vr6, so may just het my current engine rebuilt with highlift cam and map etc...
what else would be worth changing for a little more umph whilst im there!?
cheers

ok, update time....
£335 worth of welding to sills, inner sills, and floor pan, great stuff!!
but he's done a brill job!!!

also welded my drivers seat so now i dont fal out of the seat when going round corners and roundabouts, lol!

so... mot on friday... fingers crossed... i have no more money now, so mot or bust for the little....

right then -
a while since i updated...
done a few things since i last posted!!
the new stretched tyres on the back,
seat welded up,
done a bit of custom phone holder in the drivers door pocket which i'll get the photos up on here off my phone later when o2 sort my email out, lol!
and now thinking of putting some striping on as i did a bit of a paper prototype earlier and i quite like the idea!
again, photos as soon as o2 sort me out!
new clutch after the push rod had punched a hole through the pressure plate, lol,
really cool dtm exhaust to go on in a few weeks with any luck!!
then all i need is a lc5p dusty mauve wing or get one sprayed up and then it'll be ready for show season next year!! cant wait!!
then once this is all done i think me and ste in his mk2 are gonna go off in the hills for a photo session!!
so may not update again for a few weeks till im done with all this stuff!!
and..... i love my mk3.... its a deffo keeper :D

Will be updating the project thread soon. Going down to my brothers garage and putting it on the ramps next Tuesday for the following.

Full stainless Milltek

Front discs and pads

Replacing both front fog lights (if they arrive in time)

Oil and antifreeze change.

Love it though Mate, still haven't got bored of the spoiler going up & down  Plus the fact that most of the people round here have never heard of one and don't know what it is

Cheers Mate,

I get that a lot when driving about, it seems everyone in Buxton with a loud exhaust has a mission to go past me as dangerously as they can in the hope that I think they're cool for doing that  Went to the Morrisons in Chapel last Thursday to do the weekly big shop and had a Clio nearly tip over trying to go round the roundabout too fast in an effort to impress everyone

Yeah the obsession with the rear spoiler movement is a worry, especially when you're having to go over 55mph to activate it

Just need to get these wheels refurbed and the correct size tyres on the fronts  :embarassed: then I'm ready for the shows next year.

The other things I have to do are mechanical though and are prioritised over wheels and tyres at the moment.Still have to do the rear brakes so I can adjust the handbrake up and fit some new rear beam bushes.

bit of an update...
as some of you probably know...
i managed to ding the front end... again, bloody ice,
however from a very helpful sivdubgti, i got a new front end in the colour of the car and for a bargain!! cheers m8!
also got a colour coded spoiler and various bits of alsorts that are getting fitted!
just waiting on -
a bit of sill trim,
bonnet catch,
headlight,
and a new scuttle panel that i got at a complete bargain off ebay!!
so overall very chuffed that things seam to have worked out fairly well for good old larry !!
its gonna be a good show season me thinks!!

right - bit of an update,
as you may have im having a serious wheel wobble at the minute, not so bad now i have had the wheel balanced properly
but i still dont take the car over 50 really cos its horrible, lol.
me and my mate - the reliable one - had a good look the other day, and have decided that its not the wheel bearings as there is no play!
the trak rod ends seem ok, and the arb link is the only thing giving a bit of play -
so he told me to start there - i ordered the part and depending on weather and delivery time etc... i will fit it friday am of sat pm!
but have had a stern warning from the gf that i am not even looking at the car on sunday - valentines days peeps, lol!

so will update ya afteer then i think,
i also replaced another rear wheel bearing - i gues the wheels being so badly out of balanced killed it this time though!!
and as i was writing this, my wheel spacers have arrived - woo :D

Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - no longer a vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 10 February 2010, 09:19
cheers mate!
i hope so, if that doesnt work then im baffled!
if it still does it after that im gonna put the fronts back on the rear.
possibilty that it may be a sh!t tyre, it has been suggested!
also forgot - i siliconed in my side repeater cos the clips werent holding it in, and tinted my rear lights - what an improvement!
unfortunatly the right one bloomed as it was getting late, so need to do that one again with another coat, but other than that, great!
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - no longer a vento conversion and progress
Post by: LazyLunatic on 10 February 2010, 09:34
nice, get some pics up of the rear lights!

i went one step further with my side repeater, black duck tape! lol, ties in with the look of the car :D

Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - no longer a vento conversion and progress
Post by: VR6-Joe on 10 February 2010, 12:30
Are the spacers universal or hubcentric because universal spacers can cause wheel wobble as they aren't centralised on the hub
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - no longer a vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 10 February 2010, 14:39
im sure he said They were hub centric ones
don't want anymore wheel wobble lol
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - no longer a vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 18 February 2010, 17:49
well an update -
what a day, i thought i was being clever and decided on my half day i would replace the arb links -
the side that was meant to be fooked - 20 min job - really easy!
the side that was meant to be ok - the bottom bolt was ceased onto the old arb - craftily get my sis to pop down to the scrappy for another - great
put it on - torque it up, snap, bollox!
looks like im goona have to have the other from the scrappy too doesnt it :D
should have left it!! lol
but i can certainly feel the difference with the other side, the roll has reduced, but i dont think that it is the cause of the wheel wobble, think i may have had sh!t tyres!!
Title: Re: robz mk3 gti 8v - no longer a vento conversion and progress
Post by: robz on 22 February 2010, 19:18
well,
sorted the arb drop links and guess what - still wheel wobble,
so bit the bullet and booked it into the garage to sort tomoz -
and though, im gonna just swap my wheels back again, just to see for the last time - no wobble.
so must be these tyres!!
very annoyed!!!
so now i need some new rear tyres!! again, cost i dont wanna be spending!!!
cheap tyre places anyone???
but... the front feels soo much better now those buggered drop links are done :D

Cheers mate,
it's meant to be lc5p iirc
but when I went to get the same colour replacement parts it was a slightly different shade of purple?
So were thinking that mine has been resprayed at some point as the log book says blue?
May be wrong and the panels I bought hadn't had as good a life as my paint hence the shade change?

Lol life story there :D

Yeah it was then mate
couldn't wait to take the pic so it was only half fitted lol
but it does sit over to the left so need to do a bit of bodgery to the bumper for it to look at home but I'm happy with it!
The bloke who sold it to me had it on his 8v but I think it may be off a 16v
it's a scorpion system!
Will try and get some better pics later!
Agree that it ain't easy to get it sitting straight on these! Lol

Oh and by the way,
that exhaust got rid of the mid box silencer thing
and the difference in how light the revs are is noticable, happyier lower down the rev range! And a bit quicker revving on general really :D

Post by: kells on 11 April 2010, 18:58
id be tellig a lie if i thought that looked right, i really dont wanna sound negative but id try get a better fit with it, deffo kno what u mean about removing middle box thing tho, i found it the same, much better

also not sure on the wolfsburg/gti combo badge thing :undecided: i think it would look more clean without them

Yeah, but I don't really like the clean de badged look so just a difference in personal preference there i'd say! ;)
agree with the jiggling bit and it is blowing a little now but it is working progress lol
I didn't do that wolfsburg/gti badge and up close it wasn't done well lol
but that's the thing that will change when I respray the back end!!

nice but a fidelly job!
Title: Re: robz' mk3 gti 8v - dusty mauve more door!!
Post by: chrisford_vw on 11 April 2010, 22:23
Clocks look good mate I would change the needle colour (maybe colour code, black, red or orange) so they stand out. Exhaust looks good, was it hard to fit? Can you weld another bracket on to pull it straight?
Title: Re: robz' mk3 gti 8v - dusty mauve more door!!
Post by: robz on 12 April 2010, 11:10
cheers mate!
really pleased with the dials, not sure on how to change the needles but i do agree would suit nicely!
i did nudge the rev needle and then it took ages spinning it back so it read the right revs, lol.
both jobs were bloody awkward!
the thing with the zorst was that it was for a different motor although the mounting are in the right place, the golfs arent an even hanging position, so its always gonna be slightly on the piss until i can think of something to even it up, without welding cos i cant do that, lol.
needs to be cut a little shorter too!! so it hugs the bumper!
it has started blowing a little too now its settled lol.
bloody golfs!!

Post by: robz on 14 April 2010, 10:39
well i sorted that peeps!
now have nice red needles which match the new dials, so all looking smart - next job is red lighting and all will be well.....
apart from the zorst, i used cheapo sealant and now its blowing cos it all fell off :(
so got some more and some tape, and im gonna wing it back together, see if i can straighten it up aswell!
got a week off in 2 weeks so will plenty for me to do, lol.
has anybody got any good exhaust fitting tips??

cheers mate, lol, no i want that one, the sound is really nice when fiited properly, shame it only lasted 30 miles, lol
it'll look right when the bumper is cut to suit etc, but for now i just want the bloody thing to spot farting at me!
quite funny now though cos i can see how much oil its burning cos it shoots it up the rear window :D
also  kells... was looking at pics of yours somewhere, how did you get your elecy window switches a different colour? is there a giude somewhere??
looks sweet, if i could afford to go for your look i would :D
Title: Re: robz' mk3 gti 8v - dusty mauve more door!!
Post by: robz on 15 April 2010, 09:43
well had it in the air again last night...
turns out its only a small blow from one of the crappy clamps that have rusted onto the cat sleeve - so ive tightened them with lots of grease and added 3rd clamp and that seems to have almost stopped it - so when the decent sealant comes it should be fine!
the big noise is the bracket just lightly vibrating against the tunnel, so im gonna have to knock something up to pull it over slightly and all should be well again, lol!
annoyingly one of my fog blanks seems to have jumped off the car so i now need another one of those too :(
one of those weeks im thinking....

bit of an update -
spent some time fettling today, had to take the left hand side exhaust rubber mount over what was the mid box section of cos the rattling was getting worse against the bracket, lol
lots better now and is still on strong!
alsogot some of bored welsh lads bumper vents - which are fab btw!
need to get some black sealant too blend them into my bumper and it will look brill!
just need to finish rubbing and painting my dummy fog lenses and the front will be complete again!
tried the boiled linseed oil thing on the bumpers as they had gone grey again, and wow, works a treat!
however it then melted when in the hpot sun a few weeks ago, so when i re applied it today i then put some silicone back to black over it in the hope it seals it on!
looks fab too!
so once i have got the car a little more straight ill throw some pics up!

well then...
thought i had a front wheel bearing going so dropped it off at a vdub specialists - had a look and they reckon its my gear box :(
so they are gonna put some oil in it on mondsy for me so i know its done right (not done it before myself)
hopefully that will sort it but if not a new one will be in order :(
so the obvious "my engine isnt very well so what conversions should i look at" question came lol...
they said about the 20vt and vr6, then said another 8v.... then said diesel.... my face must have been a picture lol... till they started talking about power, then i came round to the idea... but could i look my mates in the face and say im powered by the devils piss???
so got alot of thinking to do... cos money is so tight atm it may be all dream work but he said he would get me a load of prices for monday and go from there!
defo wanna keep the 3 cos it just feels right to drive so even if i cant afford it now i can be thinking for the near future ;)

Think it's putting out something like 300 hp too lol
just kinda hoping that the oil will sort it then I'm gonna really try n save, maybe get a cheapo vr as a whole car and go from there!

quick update -
the guys at jsr were still a little stumped on sat about the cause of the buzzing - everything said wheel bearing exept when ya jacked it up and spun it in the air lol
but i went with my gut feelings and it was the wheel bearings and no more nasty noises! yay lol
so just need to sort the tracking out then all should be good again!
also poss gonna be getting different wheels as these ones are a pain with all of them having slight buckles :(
so all may be looking a little different soon!
i love my golf lol

Post by: robz on 20 June 2010, 12:31
ok, update time...
after the while mess with my front bearings and bodge work... i have now replaced the wishbone and ball joint which was quite a satisfying job having never done one before, all sorted!!
went in and out really nice!!
also rubbed the discs down a little to allow the back wheels on, didnt take much so happy with that!!
just need to get one tyre pumped up but i think its got a puncture as its flat as a fart, lol.
but happy with the new wheels, think i prefer them to the last ones!
so now its back to ford tomoz for this lazer allignment and fingers crossed, by tuesday ill be on the road again - yay
thanks to all that offered adv and encouragment, i loove you guys ;)

well chuffed with myself, mind the pun, lol!
ok, they did a health check, and said that the o/s drive shaft damper block is catching rear engine mount bracket, any ideas?
how do i sort that???
might explain the un findable rattle!!
also gotta nip the rear bearings up. oh and do a bit of pikey arch modification to the os front wheel arch as the new wheels are trying to eat the car :D
cheers guys, help as always appreciated!!

well not a great day, just thought id got the ailments sorted and then my clutch goes again, bit weird though, cos it just doesnt seem to be returning, hopefully this time it has put a hole throught the pressure plate cos that will be a right pain doing the clutch again!!
have ordered a new to bearing and rod and cap, and im now praying that it will sort it :(
bad times for larry, the gf is angry to say the least :(
Title: Re: robz' mk3 gti 8v - dusty mauve more door!!
Post by: robz on 10 July 2010, 15:18
woo!!!
the new rod and bearing sorted my clutch!!
so now it SHOULD be fine, just need to sort the bad wheel rubbing on the front, so a little bit of cutting required i think :D
Title: Re: robz' mk3 gti 8v - dusty mauve more door!!
Post by: robz on 08 August 2010, 19:44
well.. yet another problematic week in the life of larry...
clutch has gone again!!!
my guess is that the old arm was pooped and causing this wear on the pressure plate, and it has killed this one beyond the ability for the new one to save it :(
so gear box off again and see if im right!
complete pain in the arse, only had 1 month of daily driving to go before it came off the rd lol!!
anybody in the derby area who would be willing to help as im on me own down here :(
could be interesting getting the box off on me own :D
Title: Re: robz' mk3 gti 8v - dusty mauve more door!!
Post by: Andy-H on 08 August 2010, 19:56

small update, just gotta wait for my spline bits to come then i will get the d/s's out and drop the box!
got me work cut out but hoping to have the box off sat and new clutch in and box back on before i get left on me own again :D
thats if it is the clutch, but almost certain it is!!!!
Title: Re: robz' mk3 gti 8v - dusty mauve more door!!
Post by: robz on 15 August 2010, 13:33
Ok, good news so far, just put a new clutch in and taken it round the block, all seems good!!
Still got rattling and the car doesn't hold itself in gear very well, so my thoughts are that the diff is pooped, but drives nice and smooth now!!
Fingers crossed it keeps going for another month till it comes off the road for the vr!!
That has to be the most painful and physically hard thing I've done in a long time!!
Title: Re: robz' mk3 gti 8v - dusty mauve more door!!
Post by: robz on 20 August 2010, 14:58
ok, only just over 2 weeks to go before larry comes off the road for a while!
gonna start making a list of things i wanna do to him, starting with cheapo stuff until after the wedding in may, then it will finally be vr time!!
so my list -
alloy wheel refurb,
lower a little more and play with camber,
repair all electric windows - fit rear ones too??
lamin-x all lights,
poss re-build the 8v for sh!ts and giggles,
clean up engine bay,
finish off boot build,
re wire and tidy speaker and amp wires,
re-spray bonnet,
new n/s wing and paint,
roll arches again :D,
new wheels centre caps,
sort interior - carpet falling down,
black the a\b\c pillars,
funky roof lining?

thats all i can remember for now, i will update the list as i remember lol.
cant wait to have it sat doing nothing - yay!!

He's being very cloaky about it at the moment.

The rumour mill is saying he has viewed a couple of Mk2 G60's (according to Ben anyway). But who knows what he'll get but you can guarantee what it'll be like when he's done with it

Have a look in my thread, and let me know your thoughts on my badge query.

Keep up the good work and post some pics of the rocker cover when you get it done.

update!!!!!
ok, i did 2 wheels, enough for the calendar shoot, lol :D
so last couple of weeks i have been filling/rubbing one of the 2 really bad wheels down. primed it but it bloomed straight away, so ive decided im gonna get em all rubbed down and when the better weather comes paint em all at the same time!

so today i have put the half primed wheel back on and lifted the back end up ready for some camber to be done!!!!
anyway pics of how it stands -

Changed two washers for one on each side, looks much better now!
Just waiting for vw to get my new caliper bolts! So once they are here I'll do the other side, lose the mudguards and get some spacers sorted. Nice !

Well I assume its the same as mine.  You can adjust the front without buying anything as there is camber adjustment at the front on the struts.  Need to get it pro aligned really though if you play with it...

Post by: robz on 13 February 2011, 15:22
Thats what I thought!
Need to find a garage that can be trusted near me to do it!
Maybe get spacer on the fronts too lol

Well you could play with it and get the look you want, its very easy, then take it to get aligned to make sure they're both the same.  I'm pretty certain that main garages won't wan't to touch it though.

Post by: robz on 13 February 2011, 16:36
Thats the thing!! Ones you can trust dont wanna touch it! Yet smaller garages can't put a wheel on properly lol

Tell me about it, I was lazy once and took my white MK1 I used to have to have it's springs changed, they forgot to align it after and didn't tighten the front wheel bolts... never go there again!

Yeah!... that's why I prefer to do as much as I can myself..... oh and the fact that it's a sh*t load cheaper too with the bonus of it usually being a job.

the rear left does look a little inward facing at the front but im not sure if its just because of the angle the car is parked at..?

valve spring compressor,
stainless cam cover bolts,
tdi back box.
gonna wait until next month to buy a head set and head bolts, hoping to get the re skimmed too, ideas on how much this costs??

ok, i think ive got a mental plan going...
gonna rip the 8v out... flog it for pennies :D then once its out im gonna get someone to weld it up for me....
then once that is done im very tempted to wait for a cheapo vr to come around as a donor and then vr it :D
as the mrs says we cant really afford it at the min so i would also like to smooth the bay out tooo ready for it to go in!
no point selling as i love this car and it wouldnt bring any money at all!
so its staying as a toy and ill just have to wait to get him to the shows, gutted, but i would rather this than piss the wife off, be skint and then have to sell anyway.
so... anyone want a cheap engine :D

Right, think life isn't gonna let me keep this motor for much longer :(
Don't wanna see it go, but with work troubles and the fact I can't afford to do much it almost seems pointless owning it :(
So if anyone is interested then let me know :(
