Title: Mk1 engine advice
Post by: Pepe on 16 July 2009, 11:20
Hi guys and girls,

I'm new so please be gentle,
I am after a bit of advice, I have been shown a Mk1 Cabriolet and have been advised that it is the GTi model. Are their any sure fire ways that even an idiot would be able to tell.

I have attempted to post a photo of the engine as I'm sure there will be people on here that will be able to say yay or nay with just a glance.

Cheers in advance,

Pepe.

Thanks John, that was the answer I was expecting.

So it's likely to be a Clipper Cabriolet then, would there be much difference in performance and value for the cars if they were in the same condition?

Thanks for the speedy responce.

if its a 1.8 carby then book figure is 90bhp, GTi would be 112bhp.  value wise the gti would be more desirable, but in general if you're looking for a cab its the condition of the car more than the engine that matters, they're for cruising not racing!

Thanks again, I can see that if I do make  purchase that this site will be a great help.

Im just abit concerned as to why the owners are claiming that it is a GTi?

either ignorant or out to rip people off, you decide

as i say its possible it had a GTI engine fitted, but the managment was left as std. Could be where the confusion has come in!  Givaway is if you look round the back of the head above the inlet manifold is, if you see 4 blocked holes or fuel injectors in the head then its a fuel injection head on there

Sadly I think it may be the second of the two! As I have now been advised that it is a Karmann.

Thank you for your help and advice.

It turns out the owner is a trader who was trying to pull a fast one, so I have stayed clear.

Cheers again.
