Hi everyone about 3 weeks ago i crashed my car into the pavement hiting my drivers side front wheel it damaged the wheel quite badly and when i took of my wheel i found that my wishbone was bent quite bad and my tie rod was bent as well i replaced them both and the wheel was still at the wrong angle it was bent still, with the top of the wheel at about the right posistion but the bottom was facing inwards so it wasnt good so i thought the suspension might be bent so i replaced that too ive just put that on and its still bent.
I spun the wheel round and it spins in a nice straight line still without any wobble but at the wrong angle. what else could be damaged on the car, could it be the hub thats causing the wheel to be at the wrong angle or could it be somthing else please could someone give us some help on this subject as its stressing me out now and i want to get the car back on the road. :)

;) Meet my friend, Mr Commer ;)
Seriously tho mate, I did the same, Had to replace a lot more than you have, Not sure what exactally as the garage did it for me, But one part had to come in from Germany as no-one in the UK had it. Id recomend getting some professional help on this one.

Sounds like the camber angle is out. Have you tried adjusting it? Or is it already on max adjustment and still has the condition you're describing?
-
didnt think u could adjust the camber?? how do u do that?
-
The camber angle is out but how do u change the camber angle i have changed the angle on the tie rod to alline the wheels to the best i can but how do u change the camber?
-
You can adjust the camber using the lower ball joint. The wishbone has elongated holes to allow for this adjustment.
-
That is why it is very important, when replacing your lower ball joint, to mark its relative position on the wishbone. Otherwise you will alter the camber angle. My guess is, amongst other damage, you have pushed that ball joint into the wishbone :-\
-
Ill have a look at that and let u know how i get on thanx very much :)
-
Just another thought.......
If your wheel is that far out then maybe you have bent the arm at the top of the hub......where it connects to the bottom of the strut :-\
-
i doubt that hub arm would bend. hitting a kerb would put all the pressure on the wishbone itself pushin it back in underneath itself- is it possible to damage the actual subframe itself??
judgin by the damage that i seen to the wheel also, it must have been one hell of a thump you hit it!!
-
Yeah, I think you're probably right Gambit. Never heard of a hub arm getting bent, just hate to think it might be subframe damage. However I do remember the picture of the wheel.........wouldn't suprise me if the subframe is damaged :'(
-
Could be worse, at least you can replace the subframe. Imagine if it were a mk1 :o
-
We had a simular thing happen to a MK3
We changed everything like you did but it ended up being the hub, I would go to your local scrap yard and just buy a complete hub and change it over.
-
The only thing that i havnt replaced yet on that side of the car is the hub housing its just that i didnt think it would bend but if urs did then theres still hope 4 me.
I have put one of my old wheels on to show how bad the camber is do u think it could still be the hub housing i hope so.
Here is a pic to show u

Also off the subject ive just picked this polo up 4 my sister
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Kelviniow/BONNIES.jpg)
I think its ideal shes just passed her test and its a polo country with 62k miles and one owner from new cant be bad for ?550 i think its a bargain and its a good way to lead her in the right direction the VW Direction (shes even talking about her next car the caddy and guess what she does a bit of hairdressing lol ;D
-
I would yes change the hub etc....
Nice Polo I see original from the Island ;) But I doubt anyone but you will know what I am on about!
When it happened to the MK3 it was a P reg and only 2 years old at the time and it cost loads to sort out, at least you can get sencond hand parts.
The other thing but it sounds really silly is the ball joint in properly so many people don't get them in right and have problems.
-
Hey u know ur stuff yes its an original island car i remember a while back u were saying that u knew some1 from the island did u say uve been here before? u must off u must of seen all the DL's around now u know what im talking about people try to keep island cars over here and people like to buy only island cars but thats the way they are over here innit.
I think ive found my sis a gem of a car 62k miles and one old guy owner and well looked after cant be bad ( the back seats ive been told have never been sat in cos he was on his own and only used the car on his own)
They look it 2 lol ;)
-
i have pulled the ball joint out as far as it goes to change the camber but its out as far as it can go so its not that hopefuly it is the hub housing
-
I was born on the island, and have lots of family still there so yes I come over quite a lot.
We bought a old mk1 scirocco over there with a DL plate but it was to far gone rust wise to sort out. I think the ferry cost puts lots of people off buying cars from the island, but most of them have low milege so are great buys.
I notice that most GTI's on the island are 5dr for some reaosn!
-
yer ive noticed that i dont think that ive ever seen a 3 door gti on the island!!!!!!!!! wierd
So u were born on the island then so whats ur second name cos the island is so small and i know alot of people as i go out way too much i bet i know some1 u know no doubt where on the island were u based and when did u move off?
'We all know the island is too small everyone knows everyones bussiness scary' :-\
-
I was on about making sure the ball joint had pulled out of the wishbone fully.
Clair (G6dub) is on about making sure the top of the ball joint is properly located in the bottom of the strut (you shouldn't see any of the shiny metal)......in theory you shouldn't be able to get the bolt in if its wrong as there is a waisted section to allow the bolt in. However, it is possible, as Clair says, to not insert it far enough :o
Deffo go for the hub, if that arm is bent, it will do exactly as the photo shows. If that doesn't fix it then I think you're looking at a replacement subframe :(
-
However, it is possible, as Clair says, to not insert it far enough :o
You explained it better than me ;)
Ok surname Kitson, most of them are in Freshwater and one of my sisters is in Newport she is married and now has the surname of Benwell.
Its a long story but to make it short I was born there but I was adopted as a baby so I was only there for 3 months, I have only got to know them all over the last 5 years.

Thanx everyone for the imput about my car
Good news its back on the road i changed the following.
Wishbone ?10 (SECOND HAND)
Tie rod end ?17 (Brand new)
Suspension strut ?75 (Brand new)
Got new out rim for my BBS splits ?30 (from mo)
Split sheet metal sleeve for wishbone ?1 (brand new)
Did all of this and the damm wheel camber was still really bent.
So i thought i will change the hub housing just in case i wasnt convienced that it could of bent but there wasnt anything else i could change. I was begining to think that the chasis was bent and it would be a write off.
So i changed the complete hub yesterday and the disc brake as the other was bent. Got it all from the scrappy for a nice ?8 now i think thats very cheap :)
Put it all on and wow its looking kinda straight.
Took it up to the garage to have the tracking and camber sorted.
They told me the camber was perfect and didnt need altering its just the tracking was off the scale so they altered that and now im back on the road its perfect again. So im so happy now i was worried it was going to be a write off or somthing so thats all cool.
Thanx for everyones input cheers :) :) :) ;)
Total costs for repairs
Wishbone ?10 (SECOND HAND)
Tie rod end ?17 (Brand new)
Suspension strut ?75 (Brand new)

-
cool glad you have it sorted and yes you have saved loads by doing it yourself ;D
-
THOUGHT AS MUCH ;D
-
So the ?5 hub fixed it............excellent, well worth a go.........very pleased for you and glad its not subframe damage.
-
Yer the hub did the trick and who would off thought that a hub could bend when its that big and made of cast well all good now thanx for the help and input cheers :)
And ?5 for the hub cant be bad either god only knows how much a new hub would off cost!
Also i have had the car checked out by the garage to see if its all safe and if the sub-frame or chasis is bent and they said its all good. thats good for my confidence for driving it cos if i didnt have it checked then i would be constanly worried that somthing may still be wrong with it and not know about it.
-
cool glad it is all sorted for you. No more worrying :)
-
