I have a runout 8v in pearl grey, and the rear VW badge is a kind of off-white colour. At first I thought it had faded, but now I'm not so sure - maybe it was meant to be that colour? The badge just doesn't show any signs that the chrome finish has come off - it looks like it's always been that colour. I've also seen pics of other late Golfs with badges like mine too.
Was this standard for late GTIs in darker colours? Anyone with a 90-spec have the same off-white rear badge?

I'm not certain, but I thought they were all silver when new. Mine is now matt black.

sounds like all the chrome has come off mate, when i sanded mine back to paint it black it was an off white underneath!
-
All the mk2 gti badges where/are silver with exeption of the rallye ones of course,so its either been painted or its just old and all the colours come off or i guess it could be after market

Cheers guys, got it off today and swapped for a chrome. Now it's off, I can see it is chrome under the seal... so I guess that answers my original question!

Where did you get the new badge from?
I cant seem to find a place that sells them, heard GSF do but checked the website and couldnt find it

Just remembered - a couple of weeks ago, someone posted a link to this site:
http://www.gpcvwaudi.com/golfbuttons.html
They appear to sell various oem trim bits, including rear badges, at mostly quite reasonable prices.
They also sell the Golf GTI badges Kittie if you ever want to get rid of you Olf.

my runout gti also has a faded creamy looking rear badge
You can still get new rear vw badges from vw but only the round one is available, none of the lettered ones

Mine was a funny off white as well mate at first,
like everyone else has encountered its a common wear thing.
When repainting your original one if you decide to do that make sure you give it a god few coats then laquer it as with the mk2's all the dirt and everything hits up the back so it will wear it quickly if unlaquered,
this is probablythe factor that causes the centre badge to wear so much id imagine also
