Title: The next set of boots
Post by: Hurdy on 15 July 2009, 16:31
Just ordered a set of 17" X 7.5", 5x112, ET45 Team dynamics Pro Race alloys in Gloss black - 8.2kg (18lb)

Alloys at a very good price of £440

Along with.............

Toyo R888's road legal race tyres

Couldn't resist the urge :embarassed:

Anyone used these tyres?
How did you find them?

Next step is to look for a Recaro race bucket seat at a decent price, so I can remove a good 65kg from the front seats on track days and holidays

What compound did you go for? I use the mediums on the track car and they're awesome. I'd be a little frightened of using them on the strip though as the extra grip would do nasty things to my drivetrain!

Hi Nick.

Medium Compound (GG) 225/45/17's and they are the right tyre for the MKV's extra lard weight

I've just got to see what these will be like at the Pod at a 3K take off with the DSG's launch control

I think these are standard fitment on Scooby STis. I've been told the grip is awesome, but you have to take it easy in the wet.

I think the Renault R26R has them fitted as standard too. Bit of a cheat that as all the magazines rave over the R26R's handling when it basically has race spec tyres. Fit those to any hot hatch and I reckon they would rave about them too

Good job I'm only having them on the car part time then.

Mind you, so much for the Megane's No1 FWD hot hatch handling :lipsrsealed:

Yup, tried on some 45 offset 17's before I bought and you can chuck them on from a ver large distance (at least a few mm anyway!!)

There is over 1cm clearance at both the front and side. Goddam those TAROX's are *compact/light/gorgeous/powerful*.....

* tick as appropriate :cool:

I didn't see the snow! Yeah these tyres are not to be used in temperatures below zero otherwise they can crack the sidewalls. They come with a warning sticker on them. I wonder if Renault pass that info onto custmers of these cars?

Apart from that they are lethal on standing water, drove on mine in rain on the M3 and struggled to keep the car pointing the right way doing 50mph in the slow lane. In the end I had to pull off at the services and wait for the rain to stop and the traffic to clear the standing water off the motorway.

My mate Chris who races a 09 Mini Cooper S on them reckons you can be ok in the wet if you keep plenty of heat in them but that's not really possible while stuck in traffic driving to work is it?

Am I right in thinking that upcoming EU legislation will make such track biased rubber illegal to use on public roads?

There's talk about it but nothing is confirmed yet.

Not so sure you'll save that much weight. Had a set of recaro pole positions in my RS4 before the Golf - they saved approx 25 kgs per side (the std Audi recaros are heavy with full electrics, airbag etc...) You might save around 40kgs for a pair though, unless you remove the passenger seat completely??? What they don't tell you with all buckets is the weight of the subframes & runners!

I have ran these in the summertime for the last 2 years on my Mk4 (not this year, though, as they're now very close to the depth markers!), & Chris is absolutely right..........................  They're awesome in the dry, no worse than road tyres when damp, but are pretty scary on puddle ridden roads, IMO.  They are good when warmed up, but like you said, is this possible on your commute??  Having said all that, as long as your careful in attrocious conditions, then I can't see the problem.

There is talk in the mags about the legislation on this type of tyre, being changed for sometime in 2011, IIRC.

Stock seats are 37.5kgs each and the Pole positions are 7kg, plus 3 kg for the runners and alloy mounts etc.

2x 37.5kg = 75kg
7+3=10kg

75-10= 65kg out as it will (like you say ) be one seat only for trackdays
