If I give up on finding a mint Mk2 Oak Green and go to plan B of restoring one ....
Where do I go ? Any recommendations for taking a car to or back to original state
Not my specialised subject but know that you guys will have ideas
Thanks

So you're talking about buying a mk2 16v for 1k, spent 3.5k having a full bare metal respray and 3.5k on a full engine rebuild, new wheels, suspension, chassis, interior, etc. ?

thom on here has done his,
-
Acid dip it i dare ya. May aswel do it properly
I dont know of any mk2 restorer. May be a few mk1 specialists about. Worth asking them if so.
-
Looks out for Thom89 he's restored his own MK2 (he does this by profession too!).
Other than that there are some restorers around, Crazy Quiff's in Wallingford do MK1's but will probably be able to do MK2's just as easily.

But try Thom89 first, always good to help another on the same forum eh?

The biggest issue you will have is that you may find a lot of the parts you need are no longer available, I would still try and find a nice clean standard car.
-
Or, turning this on its head... Will an £8000 offer tempt someone who owns a less than perfect Oak Green 3 door 16v to put it back to standard and fix it up to mint? Could be a tidy profit for someone willing to put the time and/or money into it.

no guaranty in that though

I don't think you necessarily need a mk2 specialist, just a bloody good garage and an excellent bodyshop. Look up local vehicle restoration places, if they're good they should be able to do anything you give them surely?
It'd help if you told us where you are?!
I think buying a decent car and making it perfect is a better option than spending £8k on something which reports to be perfect
-
PS I'm going down the same route when I have the money (back to metal etc), only not going standard personally as mine is only an 8v and after 3 years ish I feel the need for more power

i think the mk2 would be one of the easyest cars to restore.
Rather a lot of the parts are still avalable, seat were makeing what was essentaily a mk2 golf for quite some time after vw stopped makeing them

Fair point, you may still struggle with some trim parts however.

Im flattered that my name was put forward! The secret to a level Mk2, is having the right car to start with, If the sills and rear wheel arches are rust free, then its a pretty safe bet that the rest of the shell is ok, anything else, walk away from! the rest is all about aligning the bolt on panels correctly for a perfect fit!! Painting... that's the easy bit!

Why not settle for any colour? You can always get a full re-spray done if you find the correct car.

... because it would no longer be original!

And I thought I was the only one! I really want a G60, and my mate said.. "why not just stick a G60 engine in yours!?" - To which I replied, "nahh, because then it wouldn't be original." lol. Maybe its a golf enthusiast thing.

Why not give Pete Simpson a ring at Dubbers Sports VWs? -he buys, recons and sells all sorts of Mark 2s from all over the UK and Europe. He is on 07796 304790 near Halifax W. Yorks HD7 5AU. I think he also has a web site - put the company name into Google - that should do!
Let us know how you get on.
